Here's a "test" song I threw together in an evening this past week to try out the decks I recently acquired.
Vermifuge by IAXXAXXAI on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free
It was tracked on a Fostex A8 (which needed some fixing before it would record properly, sounds good now!) and mixed to a Tascam 22-2 via a Spirit Folio Powerpad. I used some Maxell UDXL 35-90B tape on the Fostex, and it seemed to work well with that despite not being calibrated. Mixdown was to Scotch 203. After transferring to computer, the only processing done was a little bit of hiss reduction and some limiting to bump up the levels a bit - no EQ or any compression was used, as I wanted to preserve the original tonality of the master tape as much as possible.

The instrumentation is a Boss drum machine, a home-built Commonsound Noise Swash (an oscillating fuzz pedal), and voice running through a ring modulator and fuzz. I would not consider this a "serious" song of mine, just messing around having fun making some noise and enjoying the move back to tape after over a decade of computer recording. :)
(the other songs on my Soundcloud page are all older ones done on computer... but more tape stuff will be forthcoming!)

Here's one of my more bizarre songs. It will probably make roughly no sense since it's part of a farcical concept set, and the vocals could probably have been better mixed.
The A807 has only been roughly calibrated since I recapped it, and it was set up for SM900 instead of the spare SM911 reel I used, so it could stand improvement.

The strange noises at the beginning were an accident but I was reluctant to erase them. I am thinking of assembling a tape collage to lead into the song so I may well leave them there.

Vocals were recorded on a TSR-8 against a scratch track and then copied to the MSR-24. (During this copy I discovered that the TSR-8 didn't quite have a long enough timecode, which caused this to happen:
)

It was mixed through the Soundtracs RX7, and the weird, weird bass sound is the M400 cello processed in a similar manner to what Genesis did on "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight"

EDIT:

Is that your singing there, out of interest?

cool stuff ... does have a '70s prog vibe.

Thanks, I'm working on 3 more right now... I'll post em up once Im finished.:D

Awesome Allen. My girl came in to hear what I was listening to. She said, "that's a pretty song, what is it?" :D You must be pretty happy with the M-16. Sounds great.

hahaha, thanks. I am really happy with the machine. I hope I can keep it running long enough to finish all of my stuff.

Hello all,

So here is the next Beatles cover I'm doing for an EP of their stuff.

Whoa, that's really impressive. I read in your notes on the soundcloud page that you're going for kind of a "Nirvana" take on "It Won't Be Long"... I think it was Kurt himself who said that he wanted to go for a "Black Sabbath meets Beatles" thing with Nirvana. You must've heard whatever he heard :)

I also like that you turned the song on its head with the different chords & beat... it's a lot of fun to listen to!

Great job on After the goldrush!!!!
One of my all time favorite songs.Great sounding recording from the 424 too!
Beautiful sounding vocals.
Well done

Beagle I really like your choice in material and the way you do it. Nice job

new magic hero tracks up now! (all-tape of course) Odd Zen Ends / Begin Thee Again | Magic Hero vs. Rock People

Just thought I'd say that mine turned up a couple of weeks ago, probably while I was in the States.
Overall, I've enjoyed it, though a little more use of the organ would have been nice.
The 25-minute track, "Acid Greets Yahoweh"... I'm not so sure about that one. It feels more like a bonus track rather than part of the album per se. I would be kind of interested to know about it, though - how was it recorded? It sounds like a live jam.

thanks,

yeh "acid greets yahowha" was a "compromised" middle-of-the-night session in which we were joined by Sky Saxon from the '60s garage band the Seeds. it was completely off-the-cuff and we were totally out of our minds. Sky passed away unexpectedely a few weeks later, so it ended up being his final recording. i did what i could with the material and refined it as much as possible, but i did not wish to do any editing; i wanted it to appear with the same momentum as the original performance, for better or worse.

This is my current project:

(rather long)

...I'm not so happy with the performance in the first two and last two verses, those I will look at rerecording. The mix also got a bit dense and difficult to understand in places. That said, I'm rather pleased with how it's turned out.

As before, this was recorded on an MSR-24, with the vocals tracked to TSR-8 and copied across. I spent far too long trying to rescue the last verse instead of rerecording it like I should have done in the first place.

Thanks also to Lonewhitefly of 'Magic Hero vs Rock People' - the idea of using the MK2 organ at the start and end (a'la Seven Stones) were inspired by its appearance on the 'Begin Thee Again' album.
