HI, I've got a portastudio, which I'd like to use as a mixer for recording my guitar digutally on my computer. The thing is that I can't get rid of the anoying hiss it traks to the computer...

Some recomendations... thanked

PD: I'm using a pair of SM 57s, and good cables, for sure they have nothing to do with this as well as my guitar...
 
hmm. you know i get that same thing on one of my computers when i try to get my jusic from my mix down deck hooked to the computer) .. i know what my problem is on that tho is my sound card .. it is a cheap ISA AWE 64 sound blaster.. usually when i do it i have to litterally run my around through filters to take out the high hiss.. the other computer it has a better sound card it is a PCI port sound card it doesnt hiss but a slowe machine.. and i cant swap sound cards cayse my main computer wiht the AWE 64 doesnt have any more PCI slots avalible! it isnt no biggy now.
but it could be a problem wiht your sound card in your computer IF YOUR recording it through your sound cards LINE IN!.. if yrou porta studio has a DBX on in try switching that too!

just some of my two cents based on soem of the experinces i have had!

I tried several times to minimize the hiss but I guess is the portastudio. I'm Using a Soundblaster >Live 5.1 and I have conected other consoles to it (though the line in) and I don't get the same hiss, else, I don' get hiss. Well, I guess I have to filter al my traks untill I can afford a good mixer

That sound blaster you have is a PCI.. i think that ISA sound cards can be very picky about line in sources... if you tried other mixers and stuff then it has to be the portastudio for shure.... try hooking theporta studio to standard stereo cassette deck (foe ex: like a mixdown deck) and record it like that and if the cassette from the mixdown deck also gets hiss then you will know for sure!! just another idea maybe?! :o)
 
Just a heads-up...If you are using the TASCAM as a mixer to route to your computer the DBX won't help you. That is noise reduction for the tape machine tracks and not the channels.

Try lowering your high EQ and adjust for more of less using the software.

You output on the mixer may be set too high as well. Try pulling the faders a bit or lowering your trim and push up the gain on the input to the sound card.

Sounds like you may be having gain staging problems.
 
Does the portastudio have direct outs? I wasn't aware that it did. Does it have inserts? Are you using these as direct outs?
 
Na, I think he's just going from the stereo outs of the porta to the 1/8 in stereo input on the computer soundcard. sennheiser is right, turn down the stereo output of the portastudio. Also make sure the porta is plugged into the LINE input and not the MIC input one the soundcard. One has a little pic of a line with semicircles around it and one has a crude pic of a mic (at least on soundblasters).

If that's ok just make sure the input in the controls for the card is fully up. There is no real reason to have it any less than max. That will also help with the s/n ratio from porta output to computer, but be aware the SB cards aren't exactly quiet.
 
The way I interpreted the question is that he is using direct outs on his machine to record individual tracks to the computer.

Some Porta's do have track out's bypassing the tape machine.
