Popping

Still Learning.......
Probably a very basic question, but I need to ask anyway.
I use a Behringer MX2004a running into a Gadget labs wave 8/24 into Cubase VST 32.
When ever I record I get a popping sound and its really starting to annoy me and ruin my mixes.
I thought it might be something to do with the buffer levels since I read something about it once (I think.......), but I'm loathed to up the buffers due to latency. My system is pretty fast too - 1.8 Athlon with 256 DDR RAM, so I would be suprised if it couldn't handle the buffers, which at the moment are set at standard.
I also thought it might be some sort of earthing problem in the mixer. Any ideas?
The popping isn't there when I have only windows with no apps running so I'm pretty certain it's the drivers or mixer.
It's really really irritating, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I highly doubt that it's a grounding problem with your mixer....

installing the latest drivers is always a good first-step; however there are numerous other things that could be proving to be the problem.....(eg. USB port, hard drive cache, etc.)

if you're using win98 - here's a link to a good page with lots of 'tuning' tips to get rid of pops&clicks when recording:

http://www.rme-audio.com/english/techinfo/lola/lola.htm

not sure if all of these tips would apply to winxp or 2000??

good luck

I've done all the Windows cutting down stuff to optimise for audio, but still getting Popping. It's weird, 'coz its only when I have Cubase or Soundforge open.
I'm still as confused as ever..........

Do you have another (internal?) soundcard on there that is set to the wrong sample rate?

It sounds like a clocking mismatch.........

I have a SB Audigy in the system, but I didn't think it would cause any conflicts since I'm using my dedicated drivers in Cubase.
Could this be my problem?
I have read on the gadget labs website that one of my problems could be overclocking the CPU. This doesn't seem very likely to me with a 1.8, but could I be wrong?

right, I've adjusted my Buffers so they're bigger, but ti is not making the slightest bit of difference.
Any ideas?
Any at all?

Not one?

I just solved the same problem that was driving me mad for months. I run cakewalk PA8 thru a delta 1010 on a Intel P4 with win98se.
1. first make sure that your soundcard and app are both set to the same sample rate & bit depth. make sure you clock source is locked to something ( internal crystal probably).
2. check that DMA in enabled on your hard drive. This may seem obvious to some, but mine was not enabled and this caused the hard drive to not be able to keep up with the audio stream, and read and record at the same time.

Have you pulled up the waves in your editor and looked at them closely? If you zoom in to where the pops are and you can see them as little spikes in the wave files that only go in one direction, then it is most likely a computer problem, not a mixer issue.
