This is way, way too good be recorded at home.

Right? Please tell me I'm not this far off the mark...

I dunno, apl. I think it's possible... I suspect that Kafer is one of those musicians, like Ella, Segovia, Bix, Luciano..., that just sounds so good in real life that he'd sound that way with any mic or pre or room or engineering.

I very much appreciate the contribution Kafer has made to the board. However, it makes my own efforts just look pathetic. Maybe I can learn from him. Or maybe he can give me some ideas on how to make Psycho Surfer or How Do I Rate really good.

Thanks for your comments about our stuff Kafer. Really I should apologize for the shameless plug, this is your thread. But then again it looks like Timothy L. loves to see this thread bumped (as, I think, do most of us here). I'm pretty new around here and am likely to pull some jackass maneuver or another.

Anyway, that's pretty nice sounding for just those three mics on the drums. I will have to listen again soon. . .

I think it's very cool that everybody here's respected in their choice to be either identified or anonymous. Best anyway IMO to go by quality of music and comments rather than by what might be put up in a bio or listed as credentials in a sig line. Like others I often snoop around when I hear or talk to someone who seems interesting and it can clarify things or give an added dimension but that's kind of a cheap thrill really, compared to the music.

As long as the thread has been bumped already...

Kafer, can you tell me how you recorded the bass? I really like the sound you're getting. What kind of bass, what strings, DI vs. miked amp, etc. Any effects? What are you recording into?

(Assuming that you're willing to share your secrets, of course!)

Thanks,
Don

I’m not bumping the thread… I really have something I want to say. Only did that once.

The lyrics have an unusual quality that I often hear in polyphonic instrumental music, but less often in songs (especially catchy pop songs)… where I hear it with a totally different meaning at different times. I think the lyrics here can’t help but hit you as witty with a special impact for anyone who’s been or fantasized about being a performer on stage. Even though it’s got a pop music surface I’m hearing something else in it having more to do with other types of moments of truth. Maybe you can relate if you’ve been through life and death experiences that knock the wind out of you and then require you to get up and back into the battle. “There’s no second act… there’s no ‘we’ll be right back’… this is the final show… ”. I think that’s what has been intriguing me most about the song but I didn’t realize it.

I've heard that people who are experiencing suicidal depression often feel euphoric from the moment they make up their mind to take the plunge. That's what I got out of the lyrics, especially considering their juxtaposition against the bouncy, upbeat track.

Am I being too literal?

I hadn't thought of that but I can see that too in the lyrics.

Is this you? or another band you recorded?

Either way, could you post some more tracks by you/the band?

Okay, last bump....

Woah, thanks Timothy, I appreciate all your comments, but now you've gone way too far! :o :)

No problem, my pleasure, I got way more feedback than I expected anyway.

True! It's all about the music! :)

The secret on this one is a that I used a keyboard amp...I don't have a bass amp, but I've got a keyboard amp, and thought , hmmm, how would that sound...glad you noticed the bass!

Thanks for noticing the lyrics, Timothy and Don...I think you're interpretations are good...I have other thoughts as well, but it's always interesting to know what other people get out of them...I think they are different for a pop song if just for the fact that there are no repeating bits! Very glad you like them, thanks!

Yeah, it's just me...don't have anything else at this point, but if I do...thanks.

Okay, thanks again to those who replied (especially Timothy, for his crazy enthusiasm). Great feedback, I appreciate it.

Bye for now. :)
