Pop filter or foam windscreen?

I'm trying to stand up a small home studio (Keyboard, PC, Mic, etc.) on a very limited budget. I bought the best SONY mic that Best Buy had and it was still only $40. It's simply to get me started. I've found that when recording vocals, the p's, b's and s's are spiking on the track's graph and sometimes the actual wind from my voice can be heard. I try to correct for that problem by standing a few more inches away from the mic, but then my voice sounds a little too far back in the mix which makes it hard to understand some words (I have a soft raspy singing voice that doesn't project like most vocalist). I work with the EQ to bring out more distinction, but it's still tough. That leads me to my actual question.

Until I can afford to purchase a nice studio quality mic and mic preamp, would I be better off using a pop filter ($30) or foam windscreen ($4) to enable me to stand closer (approx 4 inches) to the mic without hearing any exagerated consonants or wind in the recording? What does each do? Should I get both?

I'm very new to studio work, so please reply with as many basic concepts and terms as possible. Thanks

The pop filter is the ticket... the foam thingy is more for wind noise outdoors and etc. Oh, and you can make a cheap pop filter with a nylon sock and coat hanger.

Yep,
My first pop filter was made out of the exact same materials,, but I did go all out and get a brand new pair of Blue stocking for looks. LOL

I read somewhere else where a person went to a local craft store and got one of those little things they use to embroider I think. Then he snapped the stocking in the middle and trim the edges.

Good Luck

I tried this myself. However, it is advised to take the wife OUT of the nylons BEFORE hanging them up on the stand. Mine fell over because of the sheer WEIGHT placed on it.

They are needle point rings... and you can also use one of those spring loaded mic clips that MF, Harvey or etc sells to attach the home made filter to the mic stand. ;)
