ok, this isnt exactly the most hitech or interesting subject. but i just snagged a nice AKG 414, and im looking for a nice popfilter. they are looking around $50 on the websites. that seems prettty outrageous, i know someone made one once here, but does anybody have a preference, do different clothes etc. make a difference?

Yes. You shold use something thin. Pantyhose is the preferred fabric. A steel clotheshanger or other think steel wire can be bent to be positioned correctly.

IMO, that solution is a pain, since it's hard to attach it to the mic stand. But if you go the fill wya of getting a gooseneck with a clamp, and one of those sewing-loops, then your already up to $50 any way... :)

There is a cheaper way to do it. It also uses nylon stockings. Here's what you do, hold the open end of the stocking firmly in both hands and 'bunch' it up a little, like you would a sock. Then, still grasping the open end pull it firmly over your head, all the way down until it covers your mouth. If you still get 'pops' you may need to double it. It is however not recommended that you go out to the 7-11 while still wearing the pop filter since the clerks seem to react badly to them for some reason. ;)

Good luck.

Thanks, vox, got a good chuckle out of that one..

You could find someone WEARING hose and experiment!

kristian,

If you can afford a nice mic, why don't buff up somemore and get a nice pop filter to go with it.

I got mine for CDN40, with gooseneck and clamp and all...

check out ur local dealer... they always have some sort of nice bargain....

I didnt say i couldnt afford a nice mic, its just the mics ive been using Crown CM700s have this dinky pop filters that go over the mic on their own, so ive never even considered one of those gooseneck ones. Im jsut saying $50 is kinda strange for some nylon, i could make one for $.50 that would probably work the same as im a little handy and i always have stuff lying around. But it wouldnt be pretty. I need to prettiness to wow people over, so i was just getting what my fellow homewreckers pay for them :)

I made my own out of a metal coat hanger, pantyhose, and a stiching hoop.

It works fine. Not as flexible as a goodneck I'm sure, but I'm with you -- $50 is outrageous.

I spent 35.00 on a new pop filter after using a homemade job. Easily worth the bucks, No more holding the damn thing in front of my face, While trying to sing.
Plus looks a hell of a lot nicer than some dirty nylons strecthed over some twisted metal, Thats about to fall off the mic stand. Go for it!

I made one out of some old nylons (my girlfriend's, not mine!) streched over a 50 cent embroidery hoop from a craft store.

The hoop works really well...perfectly round and easy to stretch a nylon through. I think what I did specifically is.....hmmm....I think I stretched the nylong tight around the inner hoop and then put a few stiches in to hold it secure. Then I trimmed it and stuck the inner hoop inside the outer hoop and tightened. Took about 10 minutes.

To hold it I use one of those mic adapters for adding a second microphone to a mic stand ($10) and I attached a gooseneck onto that ($10)...then I screwed one of those cheap plastic spring mic clips ($5) onto the gooseneck and I clamp the filter right on it. This stuff is kind of expensive but can be used for multiple purposes...so I don't consider them part of the cost of making the filter.

Anyhow, it's just about as easy to use as anything I've seen at the store....maybe a little clunkier because of the heavy microphone gooseneck. It looks homeade but there's no coat hanger involved so it looks nice enough. The nice thing is that it's easily fixable...if I trash it I can have a new filter in just a few minutes.

I used to have a few pictures but I don't think they're up anymore. I could repost them somewhere if there's interest.

I bought a 4" pop filter for $20 @ musiciansfriend.com . It works pretty good.

Do any of you use windscreens when your doing recordings?

If you're doing vocals with any sort of condenser it's pretty much given that you want a pop filter in between the talent and the mic!

I just got one from $20USD at my neighborhood Sam Ash (geesh, I hate going in there!) I got home and recorded a piano/vocal song by John Gorka called 'Part of your Own', note the 'P' there! Needless to say this p-filter rocked! (even though I didn't rock, seeing that this is a sensitive folk song and all) I still kind of jump a little when I can clearly hear my p's and b's....
Now I have to convince myself to buy a shockmount for my new mic (Soundelux U97)!
