poor memory message

I was recording a track on my DP01FX, when it suddenly quit recording and displayed a "poor memory" message. The playback is fine, but I cannot make it record. It will record about one second (or less) then the "poor memory" thing appears again.

I have only about ten minutes of recording on the 40 gig drive. I cannot understand how a drive of that size could possibly fill up in ten minutes.

Of course, there was no mention of this in the manual's troubleshooting section. Nor, in the "messages" section, was there any reference to a poor memory message.

Can anyone help me with this? I have written Tascam, but they have not yetgotten back with me on this.
 
It might be a message about the buffer memory being bad.

If it were me, I would invest a few cents on a phone call to them rather then waiting for an e-mail response or if it's under warranty still, contact the store I bought it from and get them to look into it for you via their service department.

If the drive was bad, it wouldn't play.

Yeah that deffinately sounds like something in the memory, as in refferance to a computer the RAM, not the Hard Drive. I would say check with where you bought it, and if in fact it is fairly new (10 Minutes of recording), transfer what you have to a computer and return it for another at the store if they let you.
 
Unfortunately, I've had it long enough for the warrantee to be a distant memory. And I'm not using it with a computer. I just mix onto CDR...though it sometimes takes a few round-filed coasters to get it right. This is my wife's computer, and I'm too poor and too stupid to have one of my own that I can use for recording.

I have actually used the Tascam for several projects, and had erased everything. I got it from Samash.com. I wish I could send it back and just get another unit, but I'm afraid that I've waited way too long for that. Thanks for the advice, though. I would certainly take it if I could.
 
I think the problem got solved, so I'm posting in hopes that maybe it may help someone else. I have not actually recorded any material, but I did press record and play, and, for the few seconds before I stopped the machine, all those zeros began advancing.

First of all,Tascam finally got back to me. The procedures they suggested that I try were in the manual, but on pages different than the pages they said to look on. So they even attached a copy of the current manual. That came from Customer Service. I think that I had been emailing the technical questions place or something before ,when my queries were not answered. Anyway, that pretty much restored my faith in Tascam's customer service.

They said I could try deleting, which I had already tried. Then I could try reformatting. If that did not work, then that would mean that the machine would need to be taken in for repair.

Reformatting the current partition in use did the trick. I did lose the songs, but that was okay, as they were already on CDR. So if anyone has the "Message poor" message, reformatting (or was the term "formatting...?) may just be the solution for you.

And if it may help someone, I think I know what was happening. I, for one, was thinking in terms of linear recording. I was just recording over previously recorded material, as one would on magnetic tape. I was assuming that by doing this, the previous recorded material was being deleted. I may be sucking wind, but I think I was just eating up more disc space. by recording over. I appeared to have only about ten minutes of recorded material, as that's all that played back. But I'm thinking that the material I was recording over was still on the hard drive.

I don't mean to be long winded. I am hoping that I may help someone who is as puzzled as I was when this happens. I am extremely happy that this has worked, but I would appreciate the input if anyone would care to ellucidate on the above theory about my using up more drive space than I realized.
