Who should get the DMP3?

Wow - thanks everybody! And thanks especially to all the folks who threw their names into the metaphorical hat. Sorry for any stress you might have felt - hopefully not much.

Strange how now that the poll has closed, it appears to have converted into a non-public poll. I don't think there's any dispute that evm1024 got the most votes, and when I was able to pop in earlier, what was there appeared to conform to the "rules" in the first post. But if this were larger scale and less well monitored, it would be a bust (unless someone knows how to see the individual votes at this point - I sure don't see it).

So congrats evm1024! I'm still traveling, but returning on Friday, and over the weekend I'm going to try and work out my missing 9volt wall wart issue and ship on Monday or Tuesday. I'm kind of glad you're not in London, since I would feel like a total idiot (much worse than actually being one, which I don't mind) for not having it with me right now.

I have to say, I've opened the DMP3 up before and didn't see any obvious way to mod it into a better thing -- not that I necessarily would, being in the bottom 10% of electronics knowledgments around here. But don't worry evm1024, it never felt the hot sting of my $8 soldering iron.

A few weeks ago, I was remembering cool guitar pedals I had as a teen/young adult, like an original fuzz face, one of those cool electric mistress flanger pedals, etc., and then wondered where they are -- some prolly got stolen, but then I remembered that I had given a lot of them away because I didn't like playing with effects. At first, I felt bummed out, but then it was like, OK, at least I know I gave them to other musicians (and people gave me stuff, including many of the things I later gave away), so that's actually alright.

mshilarious -- kickass that you're going with it already, and I had suspected that we did it here first :D. I bet most of us who come here have something or other that we don't use that would be really useful to someone else and is worth giving away. If you choose to do it and do it here, read through this thread (and if you can find it, the first thread where everyone announced their interest) and remember which parts appear to work best.

thanks!

I started collecting some info on other mods that have been done to them the other day.

I'll start with tracing out the schematic - unless someone else has a schematic they want to share. None to be found on the net that I cold see.

Passive component evaluations, then perhaps try PS mods and then a THAT1512 IC.

I do have some Jensen transformers that might be coaxed to work. They might be sticking out the top in the end. Who knows.

Thanks again, it was interesting.

Well, my intentions aren't that noble; I was failing at selling it the second time on eBay (nobody bid the first time), and it's taking up space so off it goes.

By the time you replace the IC, recap, drop in a tranny, and build a power supply (since that's what we are talking about if the original is a 9V wall wart), why not just buy the Five Fish kit pre  No desoldering required!

Edit: I see that the DMP3 uses INA163? That's a slim improvement to go to THAT1512. The bigger problem is INA163 is SOIC only, so it's not going to be a mod most people can do successfully.

congrats evm1024! as i said in a previous post, with INA163s, quality caps, and an extremely tight enclosure, i'll be surprised if you can eek any more out of that box without doing some damage. but pleasantly surprised! prove me and mshilarious wrong.

No, I think the box probably can be improved, but it's a question of cost and time effectiveness, and certain aspects--such as the IC--aren't likely to be enough of an improvement without completely rebuilding the circuit, and even then the biggest improvements will probably come from other areas than the IC. It's also time consuming to test and document each improvement, such that you know what mod did what. It could easily be a 100 hour effort.

agreed. it was a mistake to imply that it is "impossible" the improve the DMP3. just hardly worth the trouble, in my opinion. the chance of noticeably improving the sound is very slim, and the chance of ending up with a paperweight with VUs is pretty good (at least with my skill level). i've used it, and it sounds great...i've even looked inside, and its got pretty guts. one of the few "great as is" units for little dough. but hey, it didn't cost you anything! so maybe i'm over-thinking it. if you do jump in, best of luck.

Congrats EVM...happy modding!

Thanks! I hope to put in (oh say ;)) 100 hours of modding fun into this unit. And if something useful comes of it no one else needs to do the hours. Just follow the cookbook.

Because it is such a great little pre It will be harder to get big gains.

Thanks, Ethan

I have an Oz Audio headphone amp you can have. I'll read your sob stories and decide once I figure out who is qualified.

I'd be interested, but are you going to put this together in a new thread or hijack this one for it :D?

It appears that the DMP-3 will go to the most popular person rather than the most deserving person. You guys could have at least waited until everyone made their plea to cast your vote. That would have given this poll a slight illusion of fairness.

antichef I applaud your generosity but I think you should have just drawn a name from a hat.

Who is the most deserving person? I have read all the posts and can't decide who should get it.

ghetto3jon's DMP3 plea:

going on and on about why i deserve something for nothing feels a bit silly, so i'll keep it brief and cling desperately to my last bit of dignity.

my wishlist of gear (which includes a DMP3) has been put on hold because i lost my job. receiving a free preamp would be a great thrill, and would allow me to delete a small bit from my "gear i need" word document...which is perhaps the most satisfying and wonderful feeling a real-deal nerd can experience. and something i haven't had the chance to do in a while.

i've wanted one of these for a long time. as proof, here is a "wanted" post i put up from 2006:

https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=222854

also, as the recipient of "random gear giving," i would consider it my responsibility to return the favor. it won't be long before i acquire or discover a piece of gear that deserves some love...and it will be great fun to pass it along and allow someone else to experience the bizarre euphoria that i imagine will occur when UPS actually shows up with a random act of cyber-kindness. it would be wonderful all around if this behavior caught on.

feel free to search HR or GS, i've been an active member in the nerd community for years (shootouts, mod tutorials, and such). i think that's important here, because it would be terrible for someone to take advantage of HR and antichef's generosity and screw.

best of luck to all. now i'm suppose to say "...and god bless america", right?

All you want is a DMP3? What would you do with it?

This got me in the mood to give, even though I didn't win. So I am giving away a bass I never use, only locally, I'm not nice enough to pay or go through the trouble of shipping something. But awesome idea I haven't touched that bass in the year I've had it. http://stlouis.craigslist.org/msg/892270069.html
