we don't need rest!!
anyone else have this complaint? Just hard to get a full, oversized, killer sound. The sounds are decent in replicating, so to speak, and can "sneek" by in the mix, but when singled out, sound thin and weak. I know VHalen would just laugh. The "tube preamp" sounds the best to me when maxed out with the drive control....and the Fender amps are good too. The Marshalls...naw....ideas??

How many rhythm guitar tracks are you recording?? You wanna full, oversized killer sound?? Record at least 4 rhythm guitar tracks (6 if you are a tight enough player) and pan them about 80% left and right.

thanks OZ...I understand the layering concept...it is the solo guitar...like in a intro to a song section, song opening, or lead solo use (with a sparse backup..like say just a bass, drums combo...so going for the power trio sound) that I am having difficulties. I'm looking to get as close as possible to that Ozzie,Rhodes, van Halen sound, realizing that a little stomp box isn't the sole solution. I guess looking to "cheat" and recreate a sound of 24 12" speakers movin' some air (without actually doing it!)

Well Rhoads used a lot of different effects... although he's probably reknowned for his use of chorus effects. You could try adding some chorus to your solos.. that'd certainly thicken it up a little... my general solution to solos is to avoid heavy reverb, instead use a multi-tap delay but I don't think the POD can do these...

You do know however that Rhoads use to double track his guitar solos!!! It works for rhythm, and it sure works for leads too! Practice your solos really well and give it a go!

doubling the leads....yeah...a task I'll try. I like to do improvisational takes on my solos and therefore it would require "learning" what I did to do another for doubling. I have the multitap delays, etc, and agree that that works better than the reverbs for thickening. Nuttin' better than a power chord A "CRUNCH" with a good thump to start the day out!!! thanks....

Actually, Rhoads triple tracked his leads and he used a ton of distortion. Have you tried using the middle or neck pickup on your guitar or using the Line 6 Floorboard wah? Micheal Shenker used to partially depress a wah pedal for his lead sound. A long time ago, I used to use a Boss 7 band graphic EQ stomp box with the mids cranked and the gain up some for my lead sound. Just make an inverted V with the sliders.

You might also try turning the treble to 7, the bass to 6, and crank the mids. Put a little chorus on there and use the tap delay instead of reverb. Put the reverb at about 2.

Let me know if any of this helps.

POD Delay

The POD has a tap delay effect. For a "thick" sound:

Set the effect knob to Chorus/Delay
Set the effect tweak knob to 12-1 o'clock
Set the reverb knob to about 9-10 o'clock
Hold the tap button and rotate the effects knob to any 4x12 cab (3-5 o'clock)
Hold the tap button and rotate the mid knob to 11 o'clock
Hold the tap button and rotate the bass knob to 1-2 o'clock
Hold the tap button and rotate the drive knob past 12 o'clock
Hold the tap button and rotate the treble knob past 12 o'clock
Hold the tap button and rotate the channel vol knob past 12 o'clock
Let simmer for 2 minutes, adjust bass, mid & treb to preference and play away.
