I am thinking of getting a POD pro. I am trying to find out the differeence between smaller POD2.0 and the pro. Does anyone know what's the major difference between the 2 is? iKnow the price is twice. I played on it at guitarcenter. No one could give me a good explanation as to why it's different. Will this gadget really ehance my home studio recroding for my guitar?

Is there anything better in terms of Rack effects? Anything from Rocktron? I am looking for some really neat sounds...like sounds that are used in "YES" "big generator album" or something similar. Nice and rich and warm.
I will appreciate the suggestions. Thanks ;)

Pod 2.0 and Pod Pro

Hey there,

I own the POD 2.0 myself and am very happy with its performance. I purchased it from Musician's Friend for 299.00 (- 50.00 mail in rebate from Line 6 = 249.00). Anyway I checked out the POD Pro at the time and decided that I did not need the additional features for the extra money.

The biggest feature that comes with the POD Pro is the Digital output which allows you to go direct to your PC or any other compatible system via lightpipe. This is a major bonus for PC users. There are a couple of other differences including an FX loop, XLR outputs, a Digital Clock Sync (For synching output to your system). The amp models, Cabs and FX are the same. The programming is about the same, though the Pro is set up a little bit different. Both are compatible with the Midi Software that allows you to download and Deep edit patches for upload to the Unit.

Your second question was are there better units out there in terms of Rack FX. The answer to that question is two-fold. There ARE better FX units on the market, but I feel that the POD is one of the best Amp Modelers on the market. The others (Johnson, etc) are decent too. You do not have the control over the FX that you would, say with a Rocktron Intellifex, but you are talking of really two different birds. Since the PRO has a Loop that allows you to add FX between the Pre Amp and Amp Modeler, you would bet set. Myself personally, I don't use much more than a little reverb, Maybe some Compressor and often slight delay. The 2.0 works great for me.

I sure hope that helped a bit. Let us know what you get.

Cheers,

Fangar

IMO, unless you're going to use the SPDIF out, then the extra cost may be hard to justify

Pro Features:

24 bit converters vs. 20bit (i'm not totally sure of this)

Unprocessed Guitar Out

Studio/Live Modes

Effects Loop

AES/EBU or SPDIF out

Balanced Out

Line Input and Guitar Input

Word Clock Input

in any case, the POD is a much better tool using software to manage the settings. either Emagic's SoundDiver or Patch Wizard. i like Patch Wizard better.

The POD 2.0 also has the Studio/ Live mode. Also, Sonixx the line input and guitar input are the same, it is either or (One is just on the front and one is on the back). They can't be used at the same time. None the less, there are two inputs as Sonixx said.

I have my Sansamp Gt2 dedicated to the line in on the back of the PodPro. I'll sometimes use the distortion from the Sansamp, and the cabinet emultion from P.P. It's easy to switch back and forth If I need the sound of the Sansamp which doesn't get as woofy as Pod when using very high gain settings. Like "Pantera" type distortion. Chunk without the woof.

WOW!
So I have quite a decision to make. I agree sonixxs view that buying the pro might not justify the cost. Also I don't have too much money to burn. All I need is a effects with some variety of "clean sound" effects and some nice warm distortion(not too distorted and rough).

Fangar, so do you use your pod2.0 into your PC? Are you using it's analog outs to your sound cards?

Thanks for everyone's suggestions :D

Amt,

Hey buddy. I use the POD's 1/4" outs into recording board into ADAT. Sounds great. After I complete the tracks, I use the adat Optical outs into my PC for mixing and CD creation.

Sounds like you would be best off with the 2.0 unless you are going into a PC card and need the direct PC type outs. You might check out the new POD for PC recording (Called the GuitarPort):

I am not too familiar with it, but know that it uses USB outs for PC connection. Might check it out. Cheaper ($169.00) than the POD series as well.

Good luck,

how do you use software to manage the settings? is the pod hooked up to the computer with midi or something?

Good question,

To connect your PODs MIDI to your sound card in, a special cable is needed. Use a COMPUTER SOUND-CARD-TO-MIDI cable that is compatible with Sound-Blaster-type PC Sound Cards. These use the PC's joystick out for MIDI. This cable should provide MIDI in and out as well as a joystick "thru" connector, so you won't have to disconnect your game controller when connected for MIDI. The MIDI connectors on the cable should be male, so you can plug them right into your POD.

Here is what one looks like:

http://www.hosatech.com/SBC195.html (Except it has female Midid Connectors (you will want Male))

You can buy one here:

yep...i have a MIDIMAN 2x2 USB/MIDI box that i connect the POD to. then i use PatchWizard to control the POD. i've also downloaded a Zillion patches. this makes a significant difference in getting most use out of the POD.

OK guys!!
So what should I get? This weekend I plan to burn about $600.00 on effects. Not sure if I should get the Pod pro or not. I am looking for some good distortion( pleasing and soft to the ears) and some really nice clean guitar sounds.

I will check out the Rocktron Intellifiex. Maybe I can use this with the new line6 guitar port coming up? Anyone use the Rocktron Prophesy yet?
Thanks. I love everyone here:D

I'm curious -- how does the Pod Pro sound hooked up for live gigs? My guess is you wouldn't want to plug it into another guitar amp, right? You would have it plugged into the pa or have a keyboard amp to boost the signal? And how do you all like your pods? Are they as good/realistic/versatile as they say? Thanks

I use mine only for recording, but they have a mode where you can turn off the speaker and amp emulation for live play. I think they shine most for recording though. A must have tool for me, as I work swing-shift and have a little daughter who sleeps in the other room when I lay down my guitar tracks at night.

i've got a POD Pro and Bass POD Pro...my recommendation is not to get the Pro unless you've got a studio, will rack mount it, plan to use the SPDIF/AES/EBU outputs, and will hook it up to a patch bay.

get a POD, J-Station or some other emulator and spend the rest on some other effects to go with them...
