I'm planning on using 2 layers of different thickness plaster board remotely coupled to timber studs to maximise isolation inside my studio to be.

Is there any value in replacing the outside layer of plasterboard with ply? It would probably look nicer, and being a different thickness to the plasterboard should be good for isolation? Or is plasterboard better?

Has anyone here used ply in their studios?

Plywood doesn't have quite the density that drywall has, so the same thickness won't do as much for isolation. Also, plywood costs almost twice as much as drywall - about the only reason to use plywood instead of gypsum (other than looks) would be for durability in areas where walls are likely to get bumped into regularly... You could use a layer of OSB (Oriented Strand Board) and then a layer of 5/8" drywall. Those dissimilar materials would likely prove better at sound attenuation than 2 layers of drywall.

However, it is expensive to do it that way.
A 4'x8' sheet of 5/8" drywall is $6.37 here
A 4'x8' sheet of 1/2" OSB is $14.97!

I guess it comes down to how much you can afford to spend, and how much isolation you need.

Thanks for the replys guys.

Guess I'll be sticking with the 2 layers of drywall
