Plugin limitations

I've got a demo of a plugin that doesn't allow me to control the output knob. I'm only using it to increase the gain/saturation and therefore need to backoff output to match the volume without the effect inserted. Is there a workaround ?

Insert an eq plugin after the one in question and manipulate its input gain.
 
Sounds like his effect is dependent on input gain, I think.
 
at the moment I'm using the Waves12345 output to volume match. is the effectively the same?
 
Anything transparent with input or output gain should do just fine.
 
Literally any transparent plugin with a gain/volume knob will do fine.
By transparent, I mean any plugin which does nothing until you tell it to. A basic eq would be ideal although, if that volume knob thing is free it would be ideal too.
 
Why can't we compensate for volume increase/loss by just lowering/raising the track's fader?
 
Lowering the fader would be fine, unless you are going into another plugin for further processing as you do not want to overload the input of the next plugin/process. Also, I prefer to keep my faders in the +5/-5 range for maximum resolution. Not necessary, just my preference.
