I've been using Soundforge and Cakewalk programs to record and already have some of the standard Cakewalk plugins. In my search to find a decent DirectX Graphic EQ plugin (in SF you must process which takes extra time to preview and the CW GEQ is only 2 band :( ) I stumbled across a company called SonicTimeworks.

I downloaded a few demos for grins and thought if I like 'em - I'll buy 'em. At least until I saw the price list!! They are asking $200 PER plugin!! I played with them and they are cool but are they worth that kind of money?? Seems very high to me for a plugin.

I evaluated a Mastering EQ, Mastering Compression and a standard Paragraphic EQ.

So my question is simple...why so $$ and are they REALLY better than CW plugins?? Is their something I don't know??

Thanks, zip

I think they're OK.

I've tested the Phaser as well as the Mastering Compressor and the Mastering EQ, and find that all are really cool, but expensive, so I didn't purchase (I'm a student, you know...). Before purchasing I would definitely try to get my hands on some other products from other manufacturers to get a clear idea of the cost-value relationship.

BTW - as long as the Mastering EQ is concerned, there are little helpers out there in the web, that may help you with your problem (search http://www.astalavista.com for this), if you're willing to solve it this way ....

Apart from that http://www.prorec.com has an article on the sonictimeworks plugins. Check that out.

Why not use the parametric eq in Cakewalk? I find that it provides all the eq I need, with 4 bands (in v9), and works just fine. Is there a reason you prefer/require the graphic eq?

PMEQ....

I use three types of EQ based on what I want to do. I "remaster" live music and have found the GEQ is best to shape poorly mixed tracks (ie...add bass / treb / remove mids).

I use a Paragraphic EQ to add certain frequencies...and paragraphic EQ to pull out troublesome midrange frequencies. I know this sounds strand but on one mix I had to stack all three to get the right frequency profile. I tried trying to use one but each had drawbacks...fixed frequencies on the GEQ and only 4 bands on the PGEQ and 3 on the PMEQ (I have version 8).

This is why I'm looking for a good directX GEQ plugin with MULTIPLE close frequencies for more control when I cut the mix.

I guess it's all preference and what I am trying to do. Of course when I create my own music I try and strive for a mix which needs little or no EQ at all...very tough when the source is a VHS recorder snuck into a concert....

Sorry to be stiking with the parametrics, but waves has the q10 (10 bands of parametric), and DSPFX has 8 bands. I have waves, and the PP1 was a little over $300 and am pretty happy with it. I think DSPFX can be had also for about $200. In a month or so, you can get the DSP with the SONAR upgrade for $100-200, depending on the version you select.

keep sticking...

...to what you know because I stand corrected! I took what you said to heart and remix two of the same tracks using the STW Mastering EQ & Compressor...

The key was the RIGHT parametric. Three bands on the CW version I had just didn't cut it. Using a 6 band with the low shelf slightly cutting I got a far superior sound...

That's the good news...

Bad news is I need to remix 2 more CD's and throw away 10 copies I made of the first one....:( Oh well - I love doing this stuff anyway - it's a rush!

Thanks for being persistent!
