58's are not considered a recording mic 57 is however. I've never like MXL stuff it always seem to be short in one way or another. I've heard Studio projects makes good stuff for the money.

Honestly I'd save another $150 and get a AT4040... I love the hell outta mine...

Audacity is truly great, done a ton of stuff with it & you sure can't beat free!

If you're doing rap, though, you just might want to check out Live. It takes some getting into, because it's got its own way of doing things, but once you start to figure it out things fall together pretty quickly. It's maybe not the best choice for straight tracking - although it can certainly do it, but I'd recommend REAPER for a more straightforward approach - however, where it really shines is loop manipulation & beat-matching stuff.

You can go to the Ableton website & get the latest Lite version (I assume that's what came bundled with your pre?) as a free upgrade, and if you need to go big you can get discounts on the whole package.
