I have had a pair of ALesis Monitor twos for 4 days, as an exchange with a dude who wanted smaller speakers for his room.

Should I keep them?

First thing I noticed is that the Alesis Monitor Twos Like hide the midrange, especially 1-3k, which is totally critical to music.

Listening to music is more pleasurable than on the yamaha NS10ms, but his cd, which was crap on my ns10ms sound good on the monitor twos.

The monitor twos have less highs and slightly better detail, and a much more present low end, and they ar big.

he wants to keep my yamahas. I have three days to decide.

Do you suggest I keep and learn the monitor twos or are the yamahas just generally more superior and more translatable than the Alesis?

Precc any comments or previous experience.

ps, Fishmed, you have both. What do you think?

As much as it pains me to say it...

...if you're used to the NS-10s and like 'em for your mixing, keep using them....

(If you're gonna upgrade - then upgrade!!!! As much as I personally despise NS10s, I wouldn't consider going to Alesis monitors an "upgrade")

Agreed....

Best to stick with what you know, unless you have the ability to keep both and learn the new ones.

Also, I think the monitor 2's were more for pleasing clients more then critical listening. I have a friend that uses them, and his mixes usually have little punch, but in his control room, the same mixes sound great. I can only imagine how a good mix would sound through them.

At least ns 10's make you work for a sweet mix. There deemphasis seems to get you to sweeten things up that much more. Actually, the low end on the nasties is not too bad if the mix is decent. You can at least "hear" the low end, but you probably won't "feel" it much.

Like Bruce said, UPGRADE, don't go backwards.

Good Day!

Depends on your room also

Don't forget to match your monitors based on the size and characteristics of your room. I have a really small and sonically untreated room and if I use anything bigger than my present monitors, I get unrealistic representation of my music due to walls reflections and all.

hey,

thanks a lot guys. I think amma gonna go get my ns-10ms back. I was thinking of keeping the monitor twos because I had read a review in sospubs that said they were the best monitors for under 1 grand.

The reviewer was mentioning them in the same breadth as Genelecs and ATCs' even though he said they were not as good.

I believe sound cracker is right when he says that they were more for pleasing clients than for mixing. They do make vocals sound good, but I have not been able to get my vocals to translate to headphone. It's like a hit and miss game.

I did not even know that THey were not that much of an upgrade. I mean, the sheer siz of them will make one believe that they are truly pro, but....

Anyhow, thanks a lot. I believe my ns10s with a sub will be better than the monitor twos
