ROCK mix for review - PLEASE!

Hi all, I have a new rock tune for you to critique. No vocals yet - I really would love to hear your critique on the actual mix, please. This is the first real distorted tune I have mixed and recorded. It sounds decent to my untrained ears, but I am sure A LOT needs to be worked on.

Firstly, I know the volume should be louder. I haven't done any normalizing... And I am pretty sure the solo needs to come down in volume a bit... Also, I think the main guitar sounds a bit thin, maybe I should add some mid?

And remember, I am NOT a bass player, so I know it needs work. Please give me your honest opinion on the mix, and if let me know if mastering will 'nearly' make this one ready for at least an INDY release (well if the vocals end up gellin) - I appreciate it as always!

Well, I'm pretty much a newbie too, so I can tell ya what I hear, but unfortunately not how to fix it. :(

First, I think that with the right kind of vocals on that tune, it could most definitely rock! For some reason, I was hearing a Rob Halford vocal line over it. Maybe if he's not busy... ;) :D

I think the first soft part bridge is really nice, and I would have liked to hear more of that or to have heard it again. I did think it came up rather abruptly though - not that it went from heavy to soft right away... I dig that, but it sort of seemed like a bunch of sound just dropped off - dunno how to explain sorry.

Also, another soft part right after the 3 minute mark was really cool with some "tinkling" (no not taking a wizz, but don't know how to describe it) synth part up high. But, I think I heard that same "tinkling" happening during the verses too, and at first I thought it was just some strange distortion happening with the guitar, but then when I heard that part by itself, I realized what it was. I think though that it's fighting with the guitar for its frequency - maybe some EQ cut on guitar in its range...?

And overall, you've got the infamous shoebox effect going - mostly on the drums I think. I wish I had the answer for that one, since I seem to have it all too often.

Anyway, would be interested to hear this finished with the vocals. Good stuff...

Well you say it's a rough mix, so what do you want crituiqeing on?<sp> Need to check you master levels, or record a hotter signal cause it's really low, sounds alright to me, the high hat is a bit tinny for my taste, but like ^^^^^ said that song sounds like it could TOTALLY ROCK!! I'm making up lyrics to it while I'm listening to it and I love it. Really need to hear the vocals with it to see how it will fill out. Oh and WHERE"S THE BASS?!?!?!?!?

I think there should be a bigger bass presence, not only on the bass itself, but on the guitar as well. Just roll the bass up a little on the guitar, and it would sound really cool. Maybe a little more reverb on the guitar, too. Hi-hats are a bit on the tinny side as well. Also, little comment on the drumming: there's not enough flavor or variation, in my opinion. A crash or a fill here and there would really add a lot.
