I'd appreciate any thoughts or comments on my first two attempts at recording/mixing...

They are Christian songs called "Blessing" and "Turkey Song". Located at my web site....

Or, if you prefer a direct route to the mp3...

Please offer any comments or suggestions regarding these songs. Your help and influence is appreciated.

Thanks,
Jay

Good Song

I think you have to bring the vocal back into the same room with the instruments. You will probably have to redo the vocals and start with, say a 2:1 compression and then a more subtle echo.
Perhaps something to simulate a warm room..........
The vocal is quite good and should NOT be obscured with too much effects.

Good Luck to you.

If these are truly your first attempts at recording and mixing, I would say you defiantly have a talent for it.

Are you working on a Portastudio cassette? It kinna sounds like it in that your beds are pure mono which suggests a bounce and then the extra guitar and vocals added on the second pass.

This is a tough format to work with because after the bounce, there isn't much you can do to fix it.

I would also agree with HeavyD about the outer-space verb on the second track. Try to make the band sound as though they are in the same room is sage advice.

Welcome to the clinic!

To fit in here, it is customary to listen to other peoples work here and give a comment or two about your thoughts on their stuff, even if you feel you have little to contribute in the way of advice, it will at least show that you have an interest in the common good of the forum and not just in your own posts.

Cheers! :)

I like Turkey Song. I think that the song would sound much better WITHOUT the backing vocals though. It would have more intenstity with just the lead vocal alone.

It's got a Dylan thing going on to me. Cool.

Yep, this is my first try. Thanks for the compliment.

I use a Pro Tools system using a Digi001. No bouncing between passes. I record rhythm guitar and vocals, then one-by-one add each instrument. A friend of mine does the drums.

I wondered about that! I'll cut back the outer-space effect and try to make it sound like we're all on the same planet. Thanks for the advice.

I agree! Thanks for the reminder. I will give my opinions freely....

I'd also have to say the vocals are a bit of out sync with the rest of the tune effect wise. The tune is really cool though, great lyrics. Bring the vocals up front, remove the effect and you've got a winner.

lynx,

You're the Moody Blues guy! Repost your song after you make changes. I'd like to see how things progress. Thanks for the comment...You're referring to Turkey Song, right?

I'm remixing the vocals tonight. I hope to get it finished so I can repost it.
