Hi all! I am a 28 year old single mother who has done all the "right" things. Put myself through school, got a government job, bought a house... But recently, I have felt the need to do something to make me happy, and not just follow all of society's rules- which is singing! I have always been a closet singer (shower, car, etc..). I have zero formal training, technique, know-how, or anything like that. I have terrible trouble singing high notes, and halfway through a song, I am tired and out of breath- so... yeah. My real passion seems to be in writing catchy songs for kids, so even if I am not cut out for singing, I can still live my dream, sort of. I have a few contacts (I know one of the gals who sings for the Barbie movies) and I have been encouraged to send in some original music.. I am wondering if I should invest in a few months of vocal training, or just forget it completely and hire someone with actual skills to sing my songs for me???

Thank you all for reading and responding. I am so grateful this site exists! I am including the link to the same question I posted to the yahoo questions forum. I have a little video there of me singing Grace Potter's Something that I Want. Well, it's more a picture of me drinking than a video, lol. No answers there yet :(

Please critique my singing!! Is it good? Bad? Make you run for the bathroom? Thank you for your honest advice!? - Yahoo Answers

Then just do it. You don't need anyone to tell you if you're good or bad at it if it makes you happy.

If you wanna sell songs you've written, then yeah, maybe have someone else sing it for demos. Most companies don't accept unsolicited music though.

You know what? You're right! I should just do it and I will. I just didn't want to create what could have been a good song, but kill it with my singing, lol. Thanks!!

Get working on it, come back here and get feedback and begin your journey. Learning all you can will assist you to achieve your goals.

If by some miracle you actually got someone that matters to hear your work, they'd be able to tell if they want the song whether you sing it well or not. Back in the old days, rough demos always got the ball rolling. They weren't perfect, but they gave the people in power enough to make a decision. But if you're really really really bad to the point that you kill your own melody, maybe get someone else to sing it.

You should do some vocal training. You have a passion and you have some leads. So you only have things to gain. Even if nobody hears you, it is a great joy to see yourself improving.

And there are lot of amazing singers who have been told early in their career that they cannot sing and they should do something else. So don't put too much faith in what others say.

You have a nice voice, though I can see that your pitch accuracy will probably be the area needing the most improvement.

Your voice is like any other part of your body. If you exercise and train it, it will get better. Like running a marathon...you won't do well if you just jump up to the start line and go, but if you train for it, then you will do well.

If you take 30 minutes a day training your posture, breathing and range, you will notice big improvements within a couple weeks. You seem driven to achieve your goals, so I think you'll do fine with this. Have fun and keep doing what you love.

BTW, your voice is good. You just need to condition it to working hard while you sing. You got this...

Find some youtube vids on breath control, which imo is your first weakness. Pitch will come with diaphragm control. I'm not a great singer, but I can hold my pitches when I practice (I have the training, but no voice). You have the voice...get the training.
