Hi guys, this is my first post here, so go easy on me. I really need your help here. I've been researching this problem for hours now, and i' stil very much in the dark.

I have a brand new computer (3ghz, 512 Ram 160hd and all that) and i want to record some music. I doesn't have to be the greatest sound ever, but i do want it to be of a quality that's good, crisp and good enough to put on CD after poost production and nobody will really tell the difference (outside of recording guys that is)

Now i use Cool Edit Pro, and i'm quite good with that. The problem i am having is buying a soundcard.

I will be recording 2 vocal tracks, and 1 track from my keyboard (Technics KN5000) but i need to record them simultaniously. That's the most import thing for me as the project i'm working on is all off the cuff with alot fo stuff made up on the spot. (It's a stand up comedy show with music if you get my drift)

Now what sound card would be best for that. I looked at the Delta 66, but that doesn't have a preamp which i belive would not be very good. I looked at the EMU range, but they talk about specs and stuff that i just don't understand. All i want to do is get a soundcard with a breakout box, plug it in, set up the mics and keyboard, press record in Cool Edit Pro and get each sound on a different track. It has to be multitrack into Cool Edit Pro (Like you get on multi-track recorders), but not one site answers the simple question as to whether the card does this, it just talk about all the different inputs.

And that's it really. I really just want to plug in and go. That's why i need your help guys. I know how hard it is to record vocals, so i'm not in the dark about that. It's just the hardware i'm having problems with...To recap i'm looking for a soundcard with....

3 or more imputs (2 for mics, one for Keyboard but NOT Midi)
No extra mixers, compressors ety i need to plug in
Records multitrack into Cool Edit Pro (Each instrument on a different track
Is basically a case of plugging in and we get started.

That's all i want. Please, please helop my guys. I will be happy to pay £300 or there in the region of for the sound card, but that's alot of money for me and i don't want to wais it on omething because i diddn't understand what i was buying.

Thanks in advance for your help guys. I'll check back later in the day for soom feedback.

Check out a Presonus Firebox.
However, it would require that your computer be equipped with FireWire.
It offers 4 anolog inputs (two of which have preamps).
If you need preamps for the other two analog inputs, you could look at a DMP3.

How many channels do you want to record on at once?

Glenn-

The simple answer is that a multi-input soundcard will allow you to send the signal anywhere you want. It doesn't know or care.

If you'll only be recording at most 3 inputs simultaneously and only two of them are mics, and you're sure you're not going to need more than that, then get yourself a 4 input soundcard and a stereo mic preamp. Delta 44 is popular. There are a lot of inexpensive preamps around. Another option would be the EMU 1820- It has built in preamps. There are others out there.

Glenn - Delta 44, Yamaha MG10/2 mixer. Sorted. Get something with built in pres if you like ... but the idea of being permanently tied to them doesn't appeal to me, nor does the fact that it's all extra components being squeezed into the budget ... which may mean you get the worst of both worlds rather than the best.

Your cheapest route would probably be the Delta 1010LT. It's an 8 channel card and has 2 preamps. Although you might only need 3 channels now, it's nice to have some future proofing. You can always add a mixer later if you need more preamps

Thanks for the help guys. I'll look into those options and let you know what i decide.

I have a Firewire port, so everything should be fine with those options. It's good to know that all of these will let me record Multi-track...

So using Cool Edit Pro, do you asign different imputs on the sound card to different tracks in Cool Edit Pro?

Can i just check that when i buy one of these cards, i can assign different instruments to different tracks in Cool Edit Pro....

For example, the vocals from the Souncard i can assign to track 1, and the keyboard i can assign to track 2. So afterwards when in post production on the computer, i can mess around with the seperate track levels and stuff.

Just confirm that for me guys, then i think i'm all set.....

Ok, i have a question here.

This sounds like a good option, but that must mean the mixer has two seperate outputs right?

What i mean is, if i plug both of the mics into this mixer, do two leads go into two ports on my Delta 66 and still allow me to record multi track...

Hope that makes sense, and i'm sorry if i'm making a fool of myself.....
