Please help

Many years ago I purchased a Tascam Porta 03 and, have read the user's manual, "played around" with the unit some and can make a basic recording... that's about the extent of my knowledge on multitrac recording. I want to do two things at this point... One - gain knowledge and experience on multitrac recording.. and Two - buy a better multitrac recorder. I would like to get a unit that is easy to use and very portable ... something that can be easily set up at a gig or jam session . ( I am a musician so my time will be limited in operating the new multitrac recorder...) I am considering the Yamaha MD8. Can anyone give me some insight on learning multitrac recording and would the MD8 be a logical move up for me ??

I think that the MD8 would be a good move, Mando. The only concerns I would have in your shoes, though, are recording time and compression. If you plan on plugging it in and letting it role while jamming, I just read that you'll only get 18 min of 8trk recording, or 37min of 4trk recording. I don't think 37 min is bad at all, but then why have an 8trk recorder?

Data is compressed for storage onto mididiscs, something that apparently creates a slight sound quality deterioration. I've never heard this deterioration, but others have. Something to consider, that's all.


I use a TASCAM 424 because of it's portability, ease of use, relatively good sound and features for a tape deck, and cost. Two small listening clubs that I sometimes go to also use these things to record the gigs. Works well. If I were shopping for a digital unit to replace my 424, the MD8 would definitely be on my list.

zoom came out with a palm multitracker.maybe it's more novelty than anything else,but it looks really cool!!!when i saw the ad ,my first thoughts were that it would be ultimate for musician's more into recording jam sessions,or getting down ideas quick.although,maybe i am missing the point.ummmm,it's only like three tracks ,but has bouncing capabilities.hey,why am i pushing this thing??i never even tried one out ,oh well,i guess i just think it looks cool.

Once again, I'll throw my hat in the ring by suggesting the Korg D16. This 16 track unit is VERY portable, especially compared to the Roland or Akai units. The price has gone way down this year to about $1200 - a real bargain. Records eight tracks at once at 16 bits. I can fit the d16, two Rode NT3's, a blue tube preamp, and an external SCSI cdr burner in one suitcase. Voila - a mobile studio.

Thanks for the input so far everyone ) Having my "studio" all in one suitcase is an idea i had when i first started thinking of upgrading to an 8 track... I will take a look at the specs on the Korg D16 when i get a chance... the price sounds good..thats about what the Yamaha would cost me ( for 8 tracs ) Would it be " http://www.Korg.com " ??

looked at the D16 specs...i like it !!! any idea where i can buy one for $1200 ? Musician's Friend has them listed for $1999...

You must have an old catalog. List price is $1999 but they have been selling for a few months for $1299 with a $100 rebate from Korg. I think the rebate is supposedly ending soon, but I think either they will extend it or Korg will come out with something newer and the d16 will be closed out. You might get a real good bargain then, but its tough to play that waiting game with technology. Try musiciansfriend.com to get the price.
