I would like to do a remix of the song Under your Influence that is from a few years back, or even if you think it's worth trying to salvage! Its sequenced and the keyboard bit at the end is and old Korg on monophonic mode, I don't know if the synthe works there or not, please, your opinion is needed though.
Thanks!

Under your influence

Definitely a bit of noise and grit in this older recording. The mix could use a bit of MB compression and a nicer synth patch :p

But to be sure, if you chose to redo it, this could only benefit from a) your increased musical experience b) today's cheaper and better technology.

It's a great tune so I hope you'll retrack and share the new version once it's done! We''l be waiting!

 ;) :D :)

Thanks a lot for the reply and advice, it was done on an old 4 track Fostex FD-4 recorder, and with PC based systems now tracks are not a limitation like they were before. I've got a nice Roland synthe now that will do the track justice, better that the Korg. I'll be thinking about it for sure!~

Sounds good, especially the guitars but the whole mix is heavy in the upper mids. Vox needs to be smoothed out with some slow compression I think - sounds a little peak-ish. Nice delay on it. The synth at 2:30 sounds good in a 70s retro kind of way.

Thanks for the tips and feedback Timothy, ido also suggested compression to the mix and I agree the vocal is quite shrill, EQ is needed for sure! The Korg was definitely from the early 80's era, I need to find a similar sound on one of my newer synthes. The Korg has seen better days and may be in retirement now~ :(

Bump..

Anyone else want to analyze this tune and give some feedback-I could use whatever you can recommend! :D

What model of old korg was that.......if you want to get rid of it...let me know

sounds like an old poly61

Damn, you are right on the target, thats what it is alright! You know your keyboards, thats for sure. Its been a long time since I have even fired it up, I'm not sure if its got any fire left in it, to be truthful.
Ill have to look it over sometime soon and see.

Oh, any comments on the tune? It might not be your style, didn't you post a cool country tune in the last few weeks? Your song was a great tune I think.

Clean up the noise & re mix you should have something good. The guitar & vox are particularly worth saving. The bass is a bit how's your father & the drums too far up front but both can be mended.

Thanks for the listen Ray C, I just wasn't quite clear about the "The bass is a bit how's your father " part though.
Does that mean its a old, dated sound or progression? Again I need any feedback that you can send my way.

Sorry,
The bass is nondescript. It needs some character, just fiddle with some EQ'ing so that it has a "voice" of its own rather than being a polite thud down under.

Of this mix, I'd say the bass is not loud enough and the vocals are too loud. I think it's worth redoing from scratch, though. Good tune, just needs more "production value."

The basics are pretty good...it's a bright mix. Try and get some low end into the song. Especially the bass and even the drums. They may require a boost, instead of a cut. The guitars are pretty cool...especially the playing. Leave them as they are...

Compress the drums, and eq some lows into them....that might help the bottom end. Make the bass a bit louder. (you might actually need to make the guitars and vox a bit quieter also....)

Good start though man....

Under your influence

Hey Anfontan,

The guitar playing and tone is sweet how it is. The vocals seem to me to be too thin, I don't really know what to do to the vocals as I delve mainly in instrumentals, maybe some compression.

The bass definitely could do with a boost by a few db's in volume!

Definitley worth re-tracking some parts for a re-mix Anfontan.

Thanx for sharing, let us know what you decide to do so we can compare!!

Gorty :)
