Playing with my 4-track

So I have a Yamaha MT-50 that I bought from a friend long ago, mostly just for the purpose of practicing leads over rhythms. I can't manage to get a mic to produce anything that isn't terribly faint on it. I've checked the manual, which doesn't say anything specifically, but I gather that I need a compressor? Will I have this same problem with an interface for my PC?

If it's a weak signal then what you need is a preamp. I assume you're mic'ing your guitar cabinet. The preamp will raise the gain of the microphone into your recorder. I'm a little surprised the recorder doesn't have any builtin preamps.
