hmmm, it didn't do much eh?, well there is some freq's that have changed slightly.
The reason the bass seems lower in volume is because its getting tighter-less muddy.
IMO...
When I changed 2 2x4 HF absorbers into mid absorbers(panel) it cleaned up around 4khz real good. It used to be jagged, now its smoothed out.
And the loss of HF content you notice is prolly because there is less reflection. Did you put some on the glass doors?

Ya know you might want to move your mix position to the short wall, and put teh bed on the back wall(behind you) or just toss it..you don't need to sleep do ya?;)

I got a TR40, where you at?

Tonio,

How'd you change the high abosrbers to mids? And short wall do you mean? One side has the sliding glass door and the other side has the hallway to the closets and the bathroom so I can't block it. I have rearranged things slightly since I posted the original graphic, but the studio setup and listening position are the same. What do you mean by TR40? Ah, so many questions! :D

Oh yeah, I did not put anything on the glass door or the wall opposite it.

Oh, another quick question (probably for Ethan):

I am cutting spacers out of cardboard tube for the panels that are flat on the walls. I was doing 1" spacers. Would 2" be better? What size would maximize the low frequency absorption? Again, the panels are 2" 703. Thanks!

I changed teh HF absorbers into mids absorbers by taking off the fabric covering, and replaced it with 1/8" ply-in essence turned it into a panel trap, but it did more in the mid/high end than expected. But its cool, I have better
imaging, and detail.

Short wall - put your speakers at the wall which is shorter than the other . E.G. the glass door wall or between the closet and door.

TR40= omni mic.

The more space the better the low end absorption. 3' (yes feet) would be 'optimal' but obviously impractical. Go as far as you can without them getting in the way.

Tonio- I'm using a R0DE NT1-A condenser mic. I probably won't be able to relocate the desk onto the short wall. But out of curiosity, why is that better? Would it be a problem or not to have the glass door directly behind the monitors?

Tex- Thanks a lot. Should I space them all as much as possible individually or make them all the same? Each panel has more or less space in the room depending on what is in front of it.

Thanks to both of you.

Hey Perceptes.

I'm not familiar with the rigid fiberglass panels (yet, just looking into it now), but if 12 2" panels is too many couldn't you double up a couple 2" to make a 4"? Are they stackable?

Yes, they could be. My helper (the one with all the handyman knowledge) has left the city so I'm going to stick with what I have for now, I think. :)

Ethan, if you're listening, and I know you are, I'm a little confused after reading this thread. My mixing room is only a foot bigger (11 x 14) than Perceptes. I was planning on building your bass traps in the mixing room along the entire back wall and half way down the two side walls. You told Perceptes a room that size only needs them in the corner, is this correct. Do you have any idea why there was no change? I'm nervous now about what to do. I'm putting the final coat of mud on tonight, then it's painting, and finally bass trap time. Now I'm worried. I really want my room to turn out good and be plesant to record in. I need your expertise. Should I go ahead and build the traps, or just do the corner treatment. By the way, I saw your debate with Jeff from Auralex on Harmony , and found it to be a fascinating read. I learned alot, and you represented yourself well.

Jeff,

> You told Perceptes a room that size only needs them in the corner <

Yes, though that includes the ceiling corners, especially at the tops of the front and rear walls. Also, putting a few panels flat on the rear wall (spaced away a few inches if possible) is useful too.

> Do you have any idea why there was no change? <

He used only two inch rigid fiberglass, and at least four inches is needed. That extra two inches makes all the difference.

> I'm nervous now about what to do. <

No need to be nervous. Bass trapping works.

> Should I go ahead and build the traps, or just do the corner treatment. <

If you're determined to DIY, get 705 four inches thick and treat all the corners.

Yes, Jeff is a gentleman and a worthy debator. Unfortunately, his friend Dan just showed up now to sling mud, hoping to reduce our intelligent discussion into insults.
