Sounds nice, worth the time getting the setup just right.

I can't but help notice that speaker cab...looks like someone with anger managment issues got their hands on it :p
That SVT cab has had a lot of abuse piled on it over the years, no doubt. It did get some small revenge a few years ago when it decided to smash into my chest and fracture a rib.

i can never get far enough away for the field to be how i want it, usually xy in my small room results in much to wide an image for my taste. :(

If the image is too wide, don't pan the tracks all the way. The beauty of XY is that you don't get phase problems like that.

Cool thread Norm!

XY seems to be the way to go for sure - Sonusman gave me some hints on it a while back and it's been all good since then. The phase-related issues of using spaced pairs are just too much effort for me.

Re snare - because they're centered around the snare (to keep it in the centre of the image), neither mic is actually pointing at the snare. So it helps if your off-axis sounds aren't too bad. But you won't usually get too much snare though.

Hey nice poics Mad!, Are those 184's or Rode ?
What are the colored stands about-so you know which is L&R?

This reminds me I need to get a stereo bar too.

Nope, they're MXL 603s.

Yep, white for left, red for right.

xy is nice, til you try ms in front of the kit about 5-6 feet... ;) you can even lower the mics to get more bass drum. a decent sounding room is key though.

you're totally right, but if i get the hat in the center like i want it (this is a "thing" with me) the floor tom side of the kit is never balanced (at least to my ears).

admittedly this is a placement error that i could probably work out in some way, but whenever i set up xy on kit, i inevitably get annoyed and change it out for a spaced pair or ms.

i guess it's more accurate to say i can never get everything in the field where i want it than to say "it's too wide"

really, i just wish i had 10ft ceilings. (or bigger)

this is one of thoes silly things, but i just never put my "overheads" in front of the kit.
i'll have to play with it.

You want the hat in the middle?

Nah man, the hats are supposed to be off-centre. They just take up too much space in the middle!

drives me nuts when it's noticeably off to one side.

it's just a thing.

I'm with you on that one.

word, Im also with you guys. I pan my crashes and china and splash, but i like the hats and ride to be mostly in the middle.

WTF .... you want your RIDE in the middle?????

Have you ever even SEEN a drumkit????

I hear you on FM, Nik, but let's not exclude space for alternative mixing techniques. The most used rules are the ones that need breaking most.

I don't like them wide, so I usually will pan them slightly off-center, but not enough so that it's annoying. Same with ride.

Plus, if you're standing in front of a kit, the hi-hat isn't going to be solely in the right ear. And that's the way I pan, from in front of the kit. (Even though I'm a drummer.)

But if you're panning from the drummer's throne, then wider panning would make sense, since you're hearing the hi-hat almsot 100% left. The ride would be, like, 50% right, then.

My tongue is, as ever, in my cheek. And don't listen to me anyway, I don't know shit. :)

Yeah, that's more like how I do it. I always do it from drummer's perspective because for me a fill going from high to low should go right to left anyway, it's just how my brain works. I guess in Japan or Australia it might go right to left, cos they're like backwards and stuff.

I dont like my ride completely in the middle. but i dont pan my hats or ride more than like 20 or 30% L and R. It just bugs me like if im playing open hats all the way through a chorus lets say, if the hats are all the way to the left then it seems off center because there is nothing going on on the right. thats why i dont do extreme panning with them. it might seem wierd but im ocd when it comes to balance and symmetry. And yeah I have seen a drumkit, ive spent years behind one. ;)
