This is another test mix to go to the drummer. I've not added the solo to this (cos its getting late here and I've pissed off enough people recording the rhythm part)

I think the guitars sound heavy as fuck which is good.
The feedback section in the middle turned out OK and I really like the one at the end.

There's only two verses after the intro and I think they could do with being twice as long, what you reckon?

What are you going for here? Just a demo for the drummer? I think it's fine for that as is.

Ultimately, if you develop this, you might want to look at some EQ work to separate the guitars from the bass a bit, and also smoothing out the clean/dirty transitions. Sounds like you're stepping on a pedal (?).. if so, maybe track clean and dirty gits on separate channels instead and blend at the transitions. If not, just blend the transitions so they're a little more natural sounding.

Will there be vocals eventually? Tough to make a judgement about the verse length without hearing the words in place or even, for that matter, knowing which of the two parts you intend as the "verse". Anyhoo, I'd get overdubs in place before making any arbitrary judgements on the "length" of any one section.

I like the loud and soft dynamic thing. Bass levels are very inconsistent. It seems too low during the loud part, then comes up perhaps too much in the last part of the song. You've got a bit of boominess ringing out toward the end too.

Like fat_fleet said, it's hard to judge where your guitar levels should be without hearing how the vocals fit, but my sense is that they are too loud during the chorus and the ending part. I know "heavy as fuck" is what you're looking for, but you might get a heavier overall sound if you work on balancing the guitar and bass (and drums to come). It's not so much super loud guitars, but a tight connection between guitars and bass the make a track sound heavy IMO.

Nice hard rock tone on the rhythm guitar.

It's the "verse"-length I said would be hard to judge w/out overdubs. He asked how long the "verse" should be.

Regarding the bass, I've just sent it too the bass player too.

I think I'll keep it loud at the end, I like the way it's a bit chaotic.
 
Pretty wide spread between the loud and soft parts.

Guitars sounded pretty good in the softer parts. There is a guitar that comes in during the louder sections that is a little bit on the scratchy side. A bit harsh.

Myself - I thought the bass sounded pretty good.

Heard some crackling at 2:01 - 2:02.
 
Cheers mate, by wide spread do you mean difference in volume?

Strange, doesn't sounds rhat big to me, but then I listen to a lot of music with these sorts of dynamics, maybe I'm overdoing it.

Cheers, I hope to get the remaining lead work put on it this evening, possibly tweak the mix a bit, I might double the length of the verses too so that the vocals won't be clashing with the little bits of lead and feedback.

An earlier version of this had a solo over the interlude too that was all delay and phaser - I still have it but I kinda like having the harmonised feedback instead and the song is already more than long enough.

Sounds really good, Jdude. :) I can't really hear any stuff that I would change. Possibly the chuggy guitars could have a bit more bottom end, but they're good as is.
 
The guitar tones sound good. Bass sounds good. Levels are fine in the instrumental version, but will likely have to be re-balanced when you add vocals. However, nothing is too loud, so it's going to be easier to fit the vocals I think. Drums might come up a little. I can't comment on the arrangement. Without hearing vocals, I don't know what is a chorus, what is a verse, what is a bridge. Break out that mic and give it a go, JDOD. Your singing can't any more "challenged" than mine!

I'm hearing some places where the guitar, bass, and vocals could be tighter, timing-wise. If you zoom in on your wave forms, you should be able to see places where one instrument or the other is slightly ahead of, or behind on the changes.
 
Cheers, I'm debating whether to re-record all of the instruments. They were all done a while ago. I'm working on the singing now
Verses are fine (quite bits) my voice isn't up to the chorus yet though. Need a lot more practice
 
Don't re-record the instruments unless you absolutely must, would be my advice. Polishing and re-polishing tracks on unfinished songs can turn into an unproductive waste of time, and can get in the way of actually finishing songs. I know, because I've done too much of that myself. Get everything in place--vocals, drums, etc. Then think about what might need another take. The exception would be timing errors in the basic rhythm tracks, but try editing first.
 
I've done a slightly different mix now - clearing up a few weird volume inconsistencies on the drums where the snares disappeared behind the hats occasionally.

Robus - I never edit guitar and bass tracks. I like each track to be a continuous performance, no editing or copy and pasting.
