Piece of gear or equipment can't live without

What is one piece of gear or equipment that you must always have that you simply cannot work without? It doesn't have to be in the studio. It could be on stage, or anywhere but it has to be music related.

Mine would be a keyboard sustaining pedal. I just simply hate it and don't even want to play without it, especially when playing the piano sound.

In the studio, I don't really have any favorite yet. Hope my next purchase will be it; the hardware compressor or an external converter.

What's your favorite?:D

The real answer, not the answer you want to hear:
Duct tape and a good set of earplugs.

The answer you want to hear, even though there's not a single piece of gear I consider indespensible:
A decent set of CR loudspeakers that match my ears.

:D

Personally, I wouldn't be able to record anything without a mic.

Oh no Glen, have you never used Gaff tape?
I'm a cheap Bohock, here's how I roll:

1. Get it at the dollar store.

2. If the dollar store doesn't have it, get it at Home Depot.

3. If Home Depot doesn't have it, you don't need it.

:D

Seriously, the two finest inventions of the 20th century, IMHO, are duct tape and the Bic lighter. Other than lighting joints for the stoner keyboard player I don't really use the Bic for much related to music*, so I couldn't include that.

*My days of using my Bic lighter like a torch in the audience of some huge concert in a barn while screaming "One More!" - like my infatuations with Captain Crunch cereal, Charlie's Angles posters, and heavy metal power chords - are long gone ;)

For me its not a question of cost, but more like an apples to oranges thing. I would shoot someone for putting duct tape on any of my stuff and there is absolutely no way you are getting near an instrument, piano etc... with duct tape:D

Gaff tape however is a much safer tape to use for delicate and/or stage related things:) I agree it is spendy though:(

CABLE TIES! don't forget the cable ties!

cable ties + duct tape = anything's possible

i'm surprised NASA hasn't put together a spacecraft with them yet

Yeah, but when was the last time you used gaffing tape to repair an automobile, make a makeshift pot pipe, keep the off-duty drunk bartendress in line until her taxi gets there, or actually tape up a duct (all of which I have done at one time or another, BTW)? ;)

You're right, I'm not going to duct tape a Steinway*...though a 2" square pad of folded layers of duct tape is great for leveling a rocking piano on a warped stage. But the last time I needed gaffing tape for "delicate work" was...I frankly don't remember.

*unless the Steinway actually needs repairing, in which case I like the black duct tape best :D

They wanted to, but they couldn't find a contractor that charged $12,000 for a 12" cable tie. ;) :D
