Pics required for mic research

hey ausrock,

did you mention earlier that you want to create a web site with the pictures of some pcb's? What's the status of that project? I'd be interested to also see some of the valve mics, like the NTK or V69ME. How many pix do you have by now? Cheers mate!

Just curios, someone mentioned they could mod a C1 to sound like a U87....uhhh HOW??? i'm really interested because the sound of the U87 is obviously desireable, but I can bearly afford the C1, definitly worth it if i can mod it though

thanks for any help
Hi, Beatnik.
Funny, I just ask Alan Hyatt about that and he’s sending me the info. I'll do the mod as soon as I get parts. According to him, all you have to do is change 4 caps. Soldering them in would be trivial. The difficult and potentially damaging part is the removal of the old caps. I think it'll be a worth-while change as I feel the C1 is a little too high-endy, but has great sound quality over-all. We'll see...

Guys, thanks for the interest.

This idea was originally spawned by some threads here dealing with the Chinese mics and manufacturers, and specifically aimed at the FET mics rather than tubes, the idea being that by comparing pics of the PCB's, it may have been possible to determine whether mics from, for example Apex, were similar to mics from Cascade, SE or the infamous J & T Fielo, (remember Bunyip's thread :D ).

Anyways, I ended up with approx., 12 mics to compare before the flow of pics ceased and at this stage I don't know that there is enough to be achieved by continuing the exercise. I started it originally to prove to Bunyip that his Fielo mic was just another "off the shelf" Chinese mic.............I think this was a major factor in his disappearance from HR. Along the way I was also able to disprove the myth about the NT2 and Behringer B? being the same mic............unless of course Rode made a radical change in the NT2's circuitry in the past and kept quiet about it. So all in all I think the pic library has served some good, but at this stage doubt there is much point in continuing with it. Of course, that is just my opinion:) .

I am interested in the modification, too. Can you keep me posted? Thanxxx!

Is there any documentation out there (web site?) that describes modifications for various mics? I might be worthwhile exploring modification of cheapo tube mics such as the V69 ME or the Nady TCM1050 Tube Condenser, which is currently on sale at musiciansfriend for $249.99. I also heard that in same cases changing the tube itself can improve the sound. Maybe we should start a new thread about this?

hey ausrock,

you've done a great job compiling these images and proving that Bunyips "Neumann clone" is similar to other off-the-shelf Chinese mics.

I was just wondering if you could make all images available to us. Or are they all in this thread? I'd love to see you continuing collecting pix, though.

Gig,

Not all the pics were posted here as some come through normal email. I managed to save them to CD just before a H/drive crash a few days ago, so I guess it would be possible to post them here............maybe ask that they be in a thread with a "sticky" that way it could stay at the top of the pile and be added to if necessary.

If I were to continue, I would like to keep the "Chinese only" content as this seems to be where there is a lot of mis-information and confusion.

I'll be heading North up the coast later this morning, (it's almost 3am here) so some sleep is in order, but will look at the whole thing in a couple of days.

Hi Aus,

I think most of the confusion is caused by what we Brits call "wheelkickers".

Thanks for your work and if nothing else it proves that the berry's are at least as well made as any of the others ( and they use WIMA caps.)

Cheers again mate.

Tony

Gig-
The C1 mod is more of a tone changing nature then an improvement. As far as tube mics go, the only mod I've seen is the Royer mod over at prosoundweb. Royer had a Mojave site set up for his kit to build this mic. I've heard the kit as a finished product and it really sounds good!
