Pickups for a custom tele?

The bass player I work with builds basses for spector bass. He took and old tele body I had laying around partially carved. He is going to finish carving it (? He has artistic liscence in this matter).
He showed me the neck he is going to put on it, new birds eye maple. I am going to need pickups for it, any recommendations?

Can anyone take a stab as to what this body is. We doubt if its fender. It is a tele body, three piece solid mahagony. There is a channel routed out from the pickup area, for wires, going to the hump above where the neck joins the body. There, there is a cavity for some kind of switch. In other respects it is routed like a tele. The channel is exposed so it had to be covered by the pick guard??? at one time. Maybe we should run the wires for whatever and put in inlay?
