On my Kramer, I have an EMG 81 and 2 single coils. With heavy distortion, when the guitar is using the 81 only, the sound is very good. But when I add one of the single coils, the sound is that much better (crisper and better distortion on low bands).

Also, it seems that during recording guitar with high gain, that this might be an alternative to turning the gain down for tracking purposes. Anyone else have similar observations or am I smoking too much crack?

EMG humbuckers punish the front end of your amp. When you add a single coil, the output drops and your amp can better handle the signal it is being given. It makes a more clear and full sound cause it isn't being overloaded with a signal thats already too hot for it to do alot with.
