Pick your pick

I'm using the Dunlop 1mm Nylon picks myself. The textured words are great for grip, especially in a sweaty, live situation. I got hooked on the nylon picks when I got a few hundred 1mm Nylon Glo picks a few years back... since I don't feel like trying to find those anymore, I stick with the black ones now.

Hey, marriage is about way more than picks. I did mention that sometimes she does the laundry, right? :D

You stay single just as long as it works for you! In the meantime, I'm flattered that you consider even any of my advice worth taking!
 
If I find one that can keep up with picks AND change strings that would seal the deal :D
 
If I use anything lighter than a heavy fender pick for a gig I end up with a couple pieces of plastic. The medium and light picks just aren't made to play hard on medium or heavy gauge strings. I tried the nylon picks but there's too much bending going on with them and it slows you down. I find I have more control with hard picks and I believe harmonics ring/sound better with hard picks.

I think playing different instruments helps me to adapt to the picks easier-though metal fingerpicks are something I cannot adjust to-as soon as I finish a recording they have to come off. Those squeeze my fingers and I can't stand it...
And mandolin playing will not work well with a 1 mm dunlop-the heavy picks will quickly knock the unison strings out of tune-or at least 1 of the 2 out-and it's a bitch trying to only play the melody on the 1 string thats in tune......:mad:
 
Musicians friend did a stupid deal of the day a few months ago...12 dozen fender delrin heavies (the light blue 1mm ones) for $5. I'm proud to say that I haven't lost half of them yet. No pun intended, but as far as picks go, I'm not picky. I got 'em cuz they were cheap.

Strat, I know what you mean. When I'm searching for a pick, there's usually 4 or 5 to be found on the dryer. She's a good woman, and always checks...of course, that could be because I've been known to leave pens in my pockets as well...

That's it man, all it takes is one permanent Sharpie through the wash--and those pockets will be emptied every time... :D
 
Oh yeah, I always use white picks so I can find them when I drop them.

Ever play the south pole? How about a pillow factory? Hmmm??? I'm not sure you thought that whole "white picks" thing through well enough! :D:D:D
 
Damn, so all my missing socks have all those missing picks! WTF. Anyway, Tortex 1.14 or clayton heavies. No wet cornflakes for me. Y'all be good now. (oh so Southern).
 
I went through a Whole Big Process of choosing, modifying and/or fabricating picks over the course of several years. Finally, for convenience, I just settled down on green Tortex for most purposes, and Fender Extra Heavies for acoustic or gritty Strat blues type stuff. If I go back to my \m/OMGMETEL\m/ roots, I will break out one of my homebrewed multi-piece picks cut from a thin crash cymbal.
 
i tend to use whatever is lying around, though i use 1mm or over picks on bass and usually around .5 mm on electric. i dont use picks much on acoustic (because of the annoying sound it makes) but when i do i just use one of the picks i use for electric.

as for brand, i found some picks (cant remember the name) online that have really nice grip, and i love them.
 
Way to revive an old thread. :D

I use Everly Stargrip. I swap between 0.50 mm (red) and 0.60 mm (orange) for acoustic and electric depending on the song. Sometimes I swap during a song. :eek: I like them because they're easy to grip when my hands get sweaty.

I'd like to try one of those wooden picks. But, are they really stiff?

Orange Tortex 60's...

Don't know if it's cause I'm wussier than the rest of you guys or because I mostly play rhythm, but I like something with a little "give" to it...
 
The yellow Tortex Dunlops (70/73s?). Occasionally, I'll drop down to a .60 for recording acoustic rhythm or playing 12 string. I used to love the flimsy nylons but as I got more into playing guitar, I needed a little more control over the pick - that's why I hold it with my thumb pressed over the centre and curling my index finger around the back to pick with the side. I'll occasionally play lead with fingers.
 
One more vote for the Fender Medium.

But maybe that's because I almost exclusively pick with my bare fingers. :cool:

I'm back on a Jazz III kick, varying between Ultex and the red nylon ones, and still using the freebie Juststrings picks for acoustic stuff, most of the time. That said, I picked up a bag of Clayton "Spike" jazz sized picks made out of "ultem," their answer to ultex, and I love them - it's a very stiff compound, so the Jazz III thickness has basically zero give to it. The thinner ones flex a little more, and additionally they're super sharp, which I dig. I've mostly been practicing with Jazz IIIs and recording with the Spikes these days, as the IIIs are a lot less forgiving, due to their thickness.
