Walters ... I think I've located the source of your problem.

What you need to do is send it out and back 12 more times. By the 12th generation, you will technically have a "warm" signal.

That's pretty much the way it works.

A perfect recording medium would capture exactly what is coming in through the inputs/preamps. Tape does not do this. However, some people favor the characteristic sound imparted by recording to tape (see your way down to the Analog Only Forum for additional fun). Those more electronically inclined than myself can probably give you an explanation involving the pros and cons of electromagnetic tape.

Tape does produce generation loss. This is typically not a good thing and that is why everyone is so frustrated by your desire to impart it to your recordings. Even in the analog days, much care was taken to minimize tape transfers so that excessive generation loss did not occur.

Perhaps you could post a sound clip of your recordings and point us to an example of what you would like them to sound like. That way, you could get some real input instead of just going in circles about terms you clearly do not have a grasp on.

I've worked my way through all of walters' posts, and the only thing that has benefitted me was a decision to never let anyone named walter touch any portion of my recordings, ever.

1. Why do you have any gear at all?
2. Did someone give it to you?
3. Did someone who knows how to use the gear die?
4. Did you kill the guy that owns the gear?

Wait........read the book. In the end what you really need to do is read the book. If that fails read the book again. Stop asking and find out for yourself. Get the book Modern Recording Techniques. That book will put you in the know as to all your questions of why digital has taken over where analogue left off. When you've got that figured out. Read the book.
