Phasing problems...does a wav. show it?

I hope this makes some sense...
A Wav. file should show equal amounts on the up and down side... correct? If your wav. file looks more like a mountain range than a mirror image of itself... does this show Phasing problems?

Even if the track sounds ok, I'm assuming it would be better if the image was more equal looking. & I'm also wondering how equal does it have to be. If the wav. is say about 3/4 the same on the shallow side... is that more or less acceptable?

I'm doing a 3 and 4 mic drum kit and the OH are fine but it's the Kick (Room/Kick) that is the Wav. that is way uneven... but when it's mixed in, it appears to sound ok... I'm just thinking it could be fuller. Also, when I hit the phase on the Preamp it does the same but puts the shallow side on top.

Any thoughts, ideas?
Thanks,
B.

No, wave forms are not symetrical positive to negative excursion and it would not indicate a phase problem. If you wanted to look at possible phase issues of drum tracks, you'd have to compare the individual tracks to each other, side by side to compare any time differences.

if you think it is the kick drum that is out of phase select it, go to edit->invert.

Thanks guys!
So it's not a phase issue. In fact I don't hear any phase issue either... it's completely a visual reaction to this wav. file that I'm having. & just assume something is not right.

So could anyone tell me whats happening that makes a wav. look like this? Where one half goes to the top and the other half only dips down a tiny bit.

I think that is called DC offset....or something like that. It is a specific problem with a specific name. It reduces your maximum alailable volume for the track, among other things.

Thanks Chibi... So is this not so serious... I mean, if the track has enough volume then don't worry?

I know the room is the cause... because when I move the mic to the left of the kit 4' it goes away. & also if you just go up and speak into it, it goes away. But w/ a name like DC offset, it sounds like a power current issue or something, not so much frequency waves in the room.

It's DC Offset. Your software should have an option to correct it.
