Phantom power problems

We did some recording on Thursday

We used Tascam M164UF, Macbook running both logic and garageband

We used dynamic mics for voice and violin and direct line into the Tascam for instruments bass and ukulele

But when we tried to put a condenser mic on the violin and switched on the phantom power we got what sounded like feedback from the direct line channels to the instruments!?

What is going on and what is the solution?

Thanks

Condensor mics usually give me feedback when used in a live recording seesion with instruments and speakers. I practice with a Rode NTK for vocals and if my drum machine gets too loud in the monitors it feeds back. It also feeds back by itself if it's too loud in the monitors. I have to crank the treble way down to play and it affects the highs but I like the tone anyway. Turn off any speakers. If you use no speakers you might be able to get away with it. Use headphones

Condenser mics generally feedback in the presence of ukuleles...I think it comes from fear. ;)

it's too intense for them... all that savage energy...

turn off the speakers

turn off the speakers and if possible use headphones.:)

What I'm getting is: turn off the ukuleles and duct tape the monitors to your head. Then move your clothes to the lower peg.

LOL not big uke fans on here then? Ok Nothing new about that

This is our open mic night... now we are starting to get some artists down for some recordings. hence seeking advice on here.

Enjoy

Will try the headphones but there should be a way to resolve this so i'll keep looking but thanks for the start.

Additional info from the Manual

Ok just looked at the manual again and this is what it says about Phantom power

Tascam Manual said:
Connecting mics
Connect mics to the channel 1–6 MIC input jacks (XLR). When using condenser mics that require phantom power, turn the PHANTOM (+48V) switch on the rear panel ON.
Connect mics to MIC (1-6)

Use the PHANTOM (+48V) switch to turn the phantom power supply to all channels (1–6) ON or OFF simultane- ously. When the PHANTOM (+48V) switch is ON, if you want to use dynamic mics at the same time as condenser mics, always connect the dynamic mics using balanced connections.

CAUTION
• Connecting a dynamic mic with an unbalanced connection could damage it if the PHANTOM (+48V) switch is ON.
• Do not connect or disconnect mics when the PHANTOM (+48V) switch is ON. Doing so could cause loud noise or damage the equipment.

NOTE
• When the PHANTOM (+48V) switch is ON (and the mixer power is ON) the +48V indicator lights on the right side of the meter panel.
• The XLR connector #2 pins are “hot” on this mixer.

Would the instruments therefore be unbalanced and if so would they therefore need jack to XLR connections?? But if they are mono would they ten become "hot" connections?
What do people think.

Still learning so its ok to say if I have it all completely wrong.
