Phantom power problem.

OMG!
So I bought a Behringer MX2004a off of ebay. The guy said it was in mint condition and I got it for $160. I received it the other day and my band came over to work out vocal parts and record them with an acoustic guitar. Much to my dismay.. the phantom power on this mixer does not seem to work. The SM57 I used worked fine.. the Oktava MK-319 did not. It's kinda ticking me off that I may have gotten ripped off.

Is this a common problem.. and if so, is there anyway to fix it easily?

Also.. would I be able to get that dude in trouble for false advertisement?

A behringer mixer with fucked phantom power sounds like a mint item.

You can leave negative feedback, and that's about it.

First you need to contact the seller with your problem and give him a chance to make it right.

I emailed him today asking about it. Meh.

I really hope I can get this working.

Did you try the mic cables? I had a problem once where certain mic cables worked fine except for the passing of phantom power. Weird but true.

Toonyfish

The cable I was usuing is my friend's cable who also uses phantom power. I'm assuming it's not the cable. I also tried the other one I have sitting here.

I believe it's unblanced cables that don't let phantom power through. I'm not sure about that though.

I received a response from the dude. He said he used it for 8months with no problems. He also mentioned a light indicating that the phantom power is turned on. I notced then that the light does not turn on. It is insured for $200 with UPS. So I may be filing a claim.

Most likely unless there is an external damage the filing claim won't do anything.
I think, considering that it passes the sound, you are lucky, as the phantom problems are very easy to troubleshoot. First thing, as always, open the damn thing and watch for some obvious defects-- loose wires, bad joints, etc. Pay special attention to the switch--they often have 'clip on' connection. Also, to rule out the switch itself check if there is voltage on any of its contacts. If none of this works, most likely the problem is in little PC board--that is a voltage regulator. Any more or less qualified tech can do the job in half an hour at the most. Keep us posted.

Ones again 15 minutes later double posting?????
What's going on on this site???

I opened it up earlier, but i had to pull the board out to get to the switch. I wasn't about to do that when my bassist was coming over to work out more vocal stuff. :-)

I think I might take it apart again right now. Anything you might suggest as to check out on the voltage regulator? That is the little board thats attached to the underside of the mixer.. right?

<That is the little board thats attached to the underside of the mixer.. right?>

That's it! Just tell me what type of regulators are there--I'll tell you which one to check. Just do me a favor--please don't short anything.

Yep. Two of them should be 7815 and 7915, the third, which you need, is most probably BD239 transistor. Turn the thing on and check the voltages on each pin of this transistor. DON'T SHORT ANYTHING!!!

I'm not going to work on it anymore.. I'm not feeling too safe with it.. and I'm doing a recording on Saturday. I'll just borrow another mixer with phantom power and run the outs into mine for now.

Thank you for your help on everything too.. could I PM you when I'm planning on working on it again to get some ideas of what to do?

If it comes down to it.. how much do you think its going to run me to get service on this?

<could I PM you when I'm planning on working on it again to get some ideas of what to do?>

Sure, just PM me and we will resume. We will bring it back to life!

<Holy shit.. I got it working...
It was just a loose cable I believe.>

Go DIY!!! :p

Now go and create something artistic! ;)
