Hi all,,,,
Am just setting up my soundcraft mixer with all my effects and instruments ect,,,,
Would like a little advice about the phantom power button.

Connected my condensor mic to channel 8 on the mixer, and then clicked the phantom power button,,, horrendous static noice and thump,,,,
What am i doing wrong ???? Does the phantom power switch turn on power to ALL the channels at the same time ???
I have guitars, keyboards and synths permenently connected to dedicated channels. Should i have it set up like this or not ????

I record into cubase via the mixer which is why i have dedicated channels set up.
Would like some advice if possible, as i dont want to blow anything up.

Many small mixers have global, rather than per-channel, phantom power. Don't know about your soundcraft. If there's only one button for PP, you can bet it covers all channels. If there's a button on each channel, well, you get the idea.

Do you have your guitars, keyboards and synths connected to the XLR microphone inputs? If not, you have no worries about phantom power. As a rule, PP is only supplied on the XLR inputs.

At any rate, you should ALWAYS mute your monitors before switching PP on or off. Many mixers have a "soft start" feature, where the PP voltage is ramped up slowly to the maximum. During the ramp-up, the mic's output is unstable; this might account for the static noise you heard.

Thanks don,,,,
Only the mxl condensor mic will be connected to an xlr channel input,, all the others are redundant at present.
All my guitars and synths etc,,, are connected on ordinary line level sockets.

Thanks for the tip about muting,,, should have realised that myself,,,what a dick !!. cheers mate.
