Phantom power necessary?

Yo Zed! I hate no one. Too much work. And yes, this thread took an odd turn due to the misconception that electret condensers don't require phantom power, but externally polarized mics do, so the tangent of electret mics was introduced. I've been there for the original poster all along, for the record, and I still am. We have to be careful about sweeping generalizations here, as in- Dynamic mics are not damaged by phantom power, and ribbon mics are a form of dynamic, so therefore... Then the misconception was introduced that condenser mics are not appropriate for live use, which is also not true.

Threads like this always catch my attention, because I am as guilty as the next guy of occasionally posting stuff that I *thought* I understood. I try every day not to do that, but sometimes I fail. All that I can do then is admit that I am confused, and attempt to become more enlightened. The worst case scenario is when a poster calls someone a name for believing in the truth, and then posts their misconceptions as fact.

People that live in a state of anger usually aren't very good at admitting that they are wrong. So- I try not to live in a state of anger, because like hating, it's too much work. And I try not to call people names, until they really, really, piss me off. The first sign that someone is not a jerk is that they can admit they are wrong, without following it with- but...Richie

Woah, I never said that. Just stating a preference, didn't say it was a bad
idea.

And yes, I thought I was right about something that's been drilled into me for
a while, but alas I was wrong.

For the record Philbag, I have accused you of nothing, and you didn't do anything that I haven't done inadvertently also. And you are absolutely *not guilty* of doing the one thing that really does piss me off, which is knee-jerk name calling. The issue of how this thread took a weird turn, and the issue of hate are separate and distinct issues, I think. Now let's see if we can find out what mics the OP has, what kind of PA he is running, and whether he actually needs phantom power.-Richie

I'm telling you, Zed, you can feel the love here. Kum ba ya my Lord.-Richie
