Hey, just had a question for everone.
My recording unit has built in phantom power on 4
of the 8 inputs.
There are 2 switches on the back of the unit, and each
powers 2 channels, which happen to be channels 3 and 4, and 5 and 6.
example:
channel 1 - SM58 vocals
Channel 2 - SM57 Guitar 1
Channel 3 - SM58 Guitar 2
Channel 4 - Bass DI
Channel 5 - OH drums Left condenser
Channel 6 - OH drums Right condenser
Channel 7 - SM57 snare
Channel 8 - SM58 kick
(red channels represent the phantom channels)

now, the thing is, i'm not liking the sound i'm getting from the kick
mic, and wanted to try the only other mic i have laying around (a cheap
samson Co1 condenser)
so that would end up changing my setup to something like this:

channel 1 - SM58 vocals
Channel 2 - SM57 Guitar 1
Channel 3 - SM58 Guitar 2
Channel 4 - Samson CO1 Condenser
Channel 5 - OH drums Left condenser
Channel 6 - OH drums Right condenser
Channel 7 - SM57 snare
Channel 8 - Bass DI

the question i have is this, can i use a dynamic mic on a channel
that has phantom power flowing? cuz i can't just turn one channel
on, the switch is for 2 channels (3+4)
Common sense would tell me that i wouldn't be able to do this
setup cuz i'm worried it would fry out the SM58 i'm running on channel 3.
thanks for any advice ahead of time!

Shouldn't hurt anything, but I wouldn't count on a very good kick sound from a small diaphragm condenser. The CO1's 19mm (about .75") diaphragm is technically a SDC, though I tend to refer to things around there as a MDC. Either way, I'm betting it saturates the electronics when you barely touch the kick. :D

The most common cause of a bad kick sound is a poor sounding kick. Before you do anything else, tune your heads really well. If that doesn't get you a good enough sound, you should seriously consider buying a good large diaphragm dynamic like a D112 or Beta 52. It will make all the difference in the world.

A quick Froogle search turned up a D112 demo/open box for $140:

yeah, i had thought about just dropping some dough on a new mic, things are a bit tight right now (when are they not?! lol)
for experimental purposes though, running a dynamic mic, say an SM58
on a 48v phantom channel won't hurt it?

On another note, if i were to be looking into a good kick mic, that didnt require phantom power, what would be a good example?
I'm using an SM58 right now, and as you said, i haven't reaaalllllly
played around with it much yet. So first and foremost i need to
experiment around with it and see if i can get a better sound
with what i have (tuning the kit, moving the mic..etc)
fo sho!

Didn't we already answer this?

Hmmm . . . I'm thinking . . . maybe a D112? Or perhaps a Beta 52? ;)

crap man...i totally mis-read what he had said up there already...hahaa i thought the mic's he listed were condenser mics....duh...
thanks for the info!!!
