Phantom Mic Blower

What happens if I plug in an SM57, turn the gain up on the pre and realize a minute or so later that the phantom power is on?

Never really did this before, so did I screw up my mic?

To my knowledge, dynamic mics aren't affected by phantom power. I know I've had my 57's plugged in to a board with a universal phantom power switch and it never damaged them.

Of course, with my ears the mics could be horribly damaged and I'd never know...

Nope. Phantom power doesn't do a damn thing to dynamics.

I have heard that phantom power is kewl with evrything except ribbon mics.

Good thing I just read this thread. I recorded a voice over this morning, and just plugged the mics (dynamics) into the board without check the phantom power... this reminded me to check, and yes sir, it was still on.
voiceover sounded fine though...

It won't hurt the dynamic mics. It won't even hurt a modern ribbon (like a Coles or a Royer) but some of the vintage ones it'll blow to hell.

I've heard it recommended that if you are using phantom power on some condensor mics and also have dynamic mics plugged into the board,that you should make all connections FIRST and THEN turn on the power.I have heard it referred to as "hot patching" if you hook up mics with the phantom power already on and supposedly this is NOT recommended.I have always been careful to follow this procedure and really can't tell you about the possible bad effects if you don't follow this preocedure.

Yeah the Pre was off when I made the connection... then I powered it up and then realized that the phantom power was left on...

In my manual (b, 802a) It says you should turn all the vol off cos it makes a big click noise as you switch it on which could blow something so you could take not of that as well.
