Hey, about to buy a bass drum mic. I'm gonna be recording a bunch this summer. The answer should be obvious which is better, but i'm on a very limited budget. What I want to know is how much of a difference is there between the 2? Is the extra money really worth getting the beta? I'm sure the beta is just great so do any of you have any audio clips using the pg52? I'd apreciate any advice.

I've got a Beta 52 and I really like it. I think you will get what you pay for.

I wouldn't buy any PG mic. A good mic makes so much difference. You'll struggle and fight with a crappy one to make it sound OK, but a decent mic will allow you to put that effort into making it the best it can be.

One time I said some nonsense thing that my friend interpreted as a wise thing, that recording should be about being creative, not fighting a losing battle against equipment.

Actually that's getting slightly off topic, at least in terms of the points I'd make in that issue.

Get a good mic, you'll be glad you did.

And make sure the drums are tuned well. No matter how well the drummer has tuned them, they're not!

Drummers should be kept away from pretty much anything of importance. They lack a fundamental part of the normal human DNA strand.

I have the PG52 and I will be selling it. It's fine for a budget but I basically ended up scrambling to sample. You're definately not going to squeeze some studio quality kick out of it.

I just bought an RE16... I'll let you know how that fares on kick... it's findable for pretty cheap. (50-100)

Personally, I think it is well worth the extra money to spring for the beta 52 on kick. I have a few of the PG packs for smaller rentals down at my shop. The tom mics however are surprisingly usable, and even the condensors sound OK on some percussion and work just fine on hats and rides. The PG 52 also does just fine on deep toms.
