Pan the kick to .1:D

What if I record that in a room with the sub in the left front corner and someone plays it back in a room with the sub in the middle or on the right??????????:D

I usualy try to reproduce the panning as if I was on the kit. Dunno why. hehe. Sometimes the drummers ask me hard panned drums, but I 'm not a fan of this technique.

But, in some way, I guess a band like TOOL with mono drums wouldnt be as interesting as they the way they actually mix their drums.

silly me, if its a live album I pan it audienbce perspective. If its studio I pan it from drummer's perspective

I like to sit there and pretend Im a drummer :)

Kryogh,

You just hit the jackpot.
Not only does the panning depend on the left/right hand drummy thingy but also on the amount of sources.

For a band like TOOL, Dreamtheater etc. you WOULD use wider stereo to clear up the whole kit and get everything in it's place.
Mono works great on 'simple' rock drumming for example
(don't get me wrong with the 'simple' all you drummer boys!)

I've just remixed some tracks for Mobias Dust (www.mobiasdust.com) which has a drummer with a huge kit. Besides that the band wanted to have the drums make the music wide, while guitars are to use on mono and only stereo to enhange some bars.

But 2 months ago I did a mix with a drummer who had only 1 kick, 1 snare a hihat and 1 crash. This was actually fun!
used 3 mics onnit and had a great mono drumkit!

Just remember, there are not real rules here.
