I got a call to do some vocal overdubs last week. No problem.
It turns out that it was for a persian techno act. I recorded the vocals, no biggie, the client was happy and left with a cd of the session files. I couldn't bring myself to go back to work so I did the following mix, gratis, and emailed it to the artist.
I prefaced it by stating that it was just an idea and that I only spent 2-3 hours on it.
He replied by saying that they already have someone to mix the album and that they were not going to be using me anymore. Is the mix really that bad? Even taking into account it was only 2-3 hours work.
I've never done anything with techno so I don't have any frame of reference.

Please listen and give me your input.

Thanks,

Jamie

I'm sorry

I'm sorry jamiecer, that mix was BAD. in the sense of very BADD.

What are they talking about. It had a very pleasing AND pro sound. I especially love the vocals, but everything reinforced the vocals nicely.

I wish I could get that quality in 2-3 hours. Or even 2-3 days.

kindly relpy my post in the mixing/mastering forum about punch.

Question...

Did you do only vocals? All vocals, or only some?
What is your setup... mic, pre and converters? Sounded pretty clean to me, but I'm listening on junk right now.
Sounded good overall from where I'm sitting.... maybe the $200 an hour you get and the 6 month waiting list is too much for Persian Techno bands to pay ;)
Bass could possibly use some thickening... techno is really powerful music, especially kick drum and bass lines.

So bummed

I just typed a rather lengthy responce to your posts then when I hit the submit key, I got a message that there was a problem.

CJ, I'll check out your post in a minute.

Paul, I recorded all the vocals. All three of them. My set up is rather simple, costly, but you'd have a tough time getting more simple. Sure KSM?( the singer brought his own mic)-> Avalon M5 micpre -> 888/24 (Protools Mix+)

The vocal mix was a bit more complicated. The tracks were a lead vocal, a double, and a spoken track for effect. The lead vocal was run through the 1176 plug-in and brought up as the center of the mix. To that vocal I added 2.64 sec of reverb (26ms of predelay) and a 600ms delay. The double track was not compressed at all. It used the same reverb, although the send to the verb was panned 60% to the right and no delay. The double was brought up in the mix at 70% to the right. The spoken track was copied and brought up on 2 tracks. The first was processed with the sans amp plug-in to add some gravel to the sound. This was placed at 40% to the left. An unprocessed version of the track was pulled up in the mix at 62% to the right.

Paul, a few questions for you. First, do you know of any Persian Techno bands that are looking for a mix engineer? I'm suddenly free of this bands obligations. Next, were you listening on junk, or is the system that you lisent to sound like junk?;)
Thanks for the reply. I hope I didn't bore you with the mix info.

I loved that... great job... nice guitar solo (it was a guitar, wasn't it? Not too many people can play a synth like that...)
