Analogue Enthusiast
Hi,

I posted the following question on another board (which shall remain nameless ;) ) but did not receive too much help. I know I can count on you guys! :) Here's my original question:

Hello,

I'm currently micing an upright piano with 2 sm57's (from the back) and would like to use the eq to smooth out the sm57's freq peak so that it's more flat thus picking up the sound better and more accurately. At which freq, and by how much, should I cut ? Thanks.

Daniel

If you know where the un"flat"ness is why not just zero in on it?
It would be better if we could hear a sample to determine what it sounds like you need EQ-wise. My bet is another mic or, if this is all you have, better placement would be the first thing to try.

...and why in Analog Only may I ask?

If you need to make it "flat" then refer to the frequency response chart here.

Remember that proximity to the sound source changes response.

I might try a 3db cut in the 2 to 4kHz range as the 57 is geared to be a vocal microphone primarily and boosts these frequencies in its design.

Good luck! :)

Jake,

We posted at the same time.

I didn't see the chart! I was going on memory from previous experience with those Mic's.

I do agree that a better small diaphragm mic like an AT4031 might well do a far better job at capturing an acoustic piano.

Cheers! :)

...because I was given a quick and detailed answer, as I always do from you guys on the Analog Only forum! Ok ? ;)

Many thanks Jake and Ghost!

What about the Behringer ECM8000, Jeff ?

Thanks :)

Sorry, Daniel.

I am not familiar with that mic or most newer models for that matter. The mic forum would be the best place for that question. :)

Traditionally, Behringer was not known as a quality microphone manufacturer but, perhaps they have changed their evil ways? :)

Cheers! :)

No, but the EMC8000 is a straight ripoff of Earthworks mics, for $50... The quality will suffer, obviously, but still...
