What can I do to be able to perform with this setup? I'm looking to minimize the chances of having a computer crash, and minimize latency. Is there any one that does this for live shows? I'm talking having pro tools open with xpand, or native instruments massive or any plug ins that I have and being able to use it live. please let me know how I can do this and get best results! thanks!

What gear?

Hi, what laptop specifically (processor, RAM, etc) what midi / audio interface are you using? What model midi controller do you have?

.

For minimal latency you need an asio soundcard (a cheap 2-channel usb one will do)

Nothing will prevent crashes. Any computer can go belly-up for any reason.

I personally use the onboard sound card... I have the shortest patch cable I could get my hands on going from the headphone jack to a DI.

The latency is pretty minimal, but I don't process any input. If the computer had to process input, I probably would be worried about latency, but as it is, it's pretty minimal.

Make sure your laptop is always connected to a power adapter during performance.
Buy yourself a decent ASIO capable audio device and try to tweak your operating system for maximum performance.

2 to 4 GB of Memory is crucial.

A laptop usually contains one hard drive which runs at 5400 RPM.
Use a 7200 RPM external hard drive for storage and playback of audio files.

Last but not least.
Make sure you have enough computer knowledge and do not, I repeat DO NOT use pirated software.
If you do, you're just asking it to crash.
