a cheap way to tame plosives. it disperses air to the sides of the mic.

I used a piece of wire (modified coathanger) taped to a mic to keep a singer from "eating the mic." The guy was used to live gigs where he had to get real cloce to the mic to be heard. The wire just served to keep him a few inches away from the mic. Maybe a pencil taped on would serve the same purpose.

It helps with lisp....

No, a lithp ith a lithp and no amount of penthilth taped to the mic will thtop you from lithping.

Sibilance on the other hand is totaly different and can in some cases be tamed with the old pencil trick

ask your uncle, he likes to play around with pencils :D

It's a cheaper version of a pop filter... but you have to actually sing at the pencil, or else it won't work.

The pencil is to stop plosives not sibilance.

see, I think I had the same discussion with (I think it was Farview) awhile back. I still think that a pencil or popscreen ONLY helps with plosives (as I use one ALL the time with voice over work and I still have to use a desser on some people).

so, i agree :)
plosives are dynamic, sibilance is frequency.

this isn't strictly true. The old reslo ribbon mics were supplied with thin foam-like sheets to place behind the grill which changed the frequency reponse of the mic.

just me two bobs worth

I thought that the pencil thing was to control siblance, though I never understood how that would work. Using it for plosive control makes more sense, but is that better than using a standard pop filter?
