How in the world can Peavey sell an all tube 120 watt amp for under 400 bucks. I mean I know they build their amps a bit cheaper than most other companies but man, the tubes alone would eat up a third of the sale price. I just don't see how they can even turn a profit on these things. All that aside I'm very curious to hear one, might buy it just because it's so cheap.

I've found that to matter less and less as time goes on. My Vox is chinese also but it was 850 bucks.

Yep, and my M-Audio I/O, Electronics in my Ford Truck, assemblies in my GE fridge, micros in my Mac, to the blades that systematically chop pork products for my astounding pressed beef and processed cheese sandwich. Golldangit you just can't avoid the stuff now can ya?

I'm kinda looking foward to trying out a Penta and Windsor and see what they came up with. If it's sh*t, I won't buy it. If it's half as cool as the ads claim it to be, WTF and buy it. It's a cheapo and not a dramatic investment. I've been pleased before with some experimental cheap buys. Just another landscape on the guitar pallete. Who can't use more of those?

Peavey amps are generally pretty cool and live up to what they say, though. I've owned a few, and played more, and I've loved them all. Though you might want to just replace the tubes as soon as you get them.

They are cheap and quite decent. Not great for heavier music but a really good bluesy amp. The Valveking is also great although I prefer my B-52

I dunno. I find some of the Peavey amps to be really good for hardcore metal type stuff. My Classic 50 especially kicked serious rear when I scooped it.

Haha, have to stop myself from using this kind of logic every time when i go into guitar center and pass the behringer stuff.

GC Salesman: Sir, do you realize that for the cost of that focusrite pre you're considering, you could buy three of every behringer product we carry?

Me: GET BEHIND ME, SATAN!

^ Single most amusing thing I've read in this forum yet. And true, which makes it even better.

I'd buy the Traynor YCS100 before I'd settle for cheap and pickup the Windsor.

These go to 12!!!!!

I tried it yesterday at my local GC. The guitar repairs guy who knows me forever left his bench and came over 'cause he wanted to hear it to, along with the sales guy.
I tried it with an american strat, a Dimebag Darrel signature Washburn, and a Les paul standard. We A/B it with the JSX that was right next to it, the Windsor stood up to the JSX pretty damn good, apart from those special switches the JSX has, they sounded pretty alike, the tubes are all the same for both, 3 12AX7 and 4 EL34, although I would modify it for KT88 power tubes, and bypass those 2 filter knobs, but that's just personal preference.

Too bad we could only turn them up to 3, I would really like to crank it up and hear those tubes at full power.
The cab wasn't all that, don't know what speakers has, but I'd get one with greenbacks on it.
All in all we came to the conclusion that you can't beat it for that price, they knew I didn't have the money to buy it so there was no reason to lie. We said that if you like the JSX better because you need more channels.... might as well buy another Windsor and it will still be cheaper!!!
Although I would still like to turn it up to 11 and see what is made of!!! (actually... these go to 12!!! no kidding!!!!!! we're gonna be louder than Spinal Tap!!! :D hahaha)

You are just so used to being ass raped by Mesa/Marshall and Fender you can't even gauge what an amp should really cost...

I have been playing a ValveKing for almost a year and have had 0 issues and love the stock tone.. Everyone rags on those amps..

I don't rag on them. I thought it was a great sounding amp for the price. I also found the B52(mesa triple rec knock off) to be quite pleasing to the ears as well. I think a lot of people underestimate amps just because they're less expensive than others. After the Epi Valve Jr. I'm convinced a cheaper amp can totally kick ass.

They're all built on cheap ass pc boards with cheap components. I would let my ears decide because I doubt that there are any significant quality differences in a Peavey and a Marshall. Drop a little money into that Peavey for mods and it just might kick some serious ass...........or not. :D

I may have to give a Windsor a "spin," one of these days, but I've currently got my heart set on a Classic 50/410. I'd tried out a ValveKing 112 before plugging into the Classic 50/410, and realized I'm a bigger fan of clean tones at lower volumes, rather than lower volume distortion. That's just my own aesthetic preference, though, and I'd recommend the ValveKing series to somebody looking for some crunch without pissing off the neighbors. If I ever need some lower volume distortion out of the Classic 50/410 (once I actually go buy one), I'll do so with a stomp box.

I tried one at GC a few weeks ago. I kinda dug it. Enough to get me interested in actually buying one.

But then someone on the Fender Forum posted the link for the combo version., and that looks pretty nifty.

Sounds pretty interesting. Suppose to support EL34, 6L6GC, 6550, 6CA7, KT88, KT66, KT77, KT90, and KT100 power tubes (single ended) and has a built in power attenuator. 15 watts with a 12" speaker. I wonder when it will be available?

I think we're about to get flooded with cheap tube amps this year.......as long as they don't all try to sound like Mesa, I'm ok with it. :D

The Peavey amps I've played through/own don't sound anything like the Fender or Vox amps I've ever tried. In that, and short of actually trying one, I'll guess that a Peavey won't sound anything like a Mesa. :)
