Ok I'm getting:

Mic: Shure SM86
Amp: Rane MS 1B

I need to fill in the gaps. I need a table stand, not for long, just 3 or 4 months. I have absolutely no room to put a ground stand. I'm also wondering if a pop filter works with a table stand and if so, what kind of pop filter to get. So I'm looking for a table stand that I can order online, one that will hold the SM86 obviously.

The other gaps I need to fill are cords, I need someone to point me to a place I can find my cords. If the SM86 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Live/Sound/Microphones/Wireless?sku=270090 doesn't come with a cord (not sure if it does or not, I cant tell) I need a 10-12ft cord to go from the mic to the amp. I then need a cord that goes from the amp to the soundcard. I don't know what they are called so im having a hell of a time finding it on the musiciansfriend site.

I'll build you custom cables if you want. If you know how to solder you can do it yourself...but if you want a price quote, email or PM me and give me the exact lengths and the specific ends on each cable.

Wait a minute, I have one of those big headphone jacks on my reciever, Will the SM86 plug into that, can I use that as an amp?

Well I figured that little question out for myself. jk why would you have to build me the cables, no place online has them? They have to have them, what do you guys record all your stuff to there's gotta be alot of people who do the same thing.

The single solitary reason I haven't ordered my stuff yet is because im waiting on a reply from here. :(

to go from Mic to preamp you will need a XLR mic cable...... it should have the XLR on both sides if your preamp has an XLR input if not the you will need an XLR to 1/4" cable......... to go from preamp to soundcard you need a 1/4" to 1/4" cable (some would say both should be balanced some would say it doesn't matter, truthfully i dont know if it does or doesnt)..... depending on your soundcard type you might need an adaptor to go from 1/4" to RCA or 1/4" to 1/8"(this is if u have a factory soundcard)

XLR-1/4" won't work because the SM86 is a condenser and requires phantom power from the preamp (which can only be carried on an XLR cable).

Also, the Rane MS1B only has an XLR output (not 1/4").

There are two options for you - you can buy cheap or invest. Investing means paying more money but you get better cables. Cheap means easy, quick, and poor fidelity.

I say that building or buying better quality is always worth it. Making them your self or having them made is the best option when you want quality. For instance, A new 15' mogami mic cable costs 45 bucks at zZounds (a common place on the internet for buying) http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/item--MOGGSTU. I can make you a comparable mic cable with Canare cable with Neutrik ends for 30 bucks. That's 2/3rds the priceIt'll be even cheaper for you to build it yourself if you know how. As for other guys on this site, I know lots buy new cables - and mogami, canare, and monster are popular options. I also know that many people build their own or have cables made for them. It's much more cost effective, especially when you have more than 50 cables to use... 50 cables store could cost you thousands, whereas making them yourself might only cost you a thousand (or less).

Building your own/having them made cables are better cables for cheaper prices. I only suggested that I make them because I like doing it, and people have bought cables from me before. It's up to you, but you won't regret getting the best cables you can.

you can get a table stand and a popfilter at any of the online places i.e zzounds.com, musiciansfriend.com, samedaymusic.com, samash.com, sweetwater.com

from what i hear sweetwater has the best customer rep and they really work with you to get what you need to get yourself going on whatever budget you have.........

also Im pretty sure you can use a popfilter with a table stand but you might want to check with someone else as i can easily be wrong

Alright, I just said the hell with it and got a stand. I wasn't sure towards compatability what I should choose for a pop filter so I didn't order one yet..

Yup. They have a bendable gooseneck, so then you can put it right up on the mic, or farther away to create a barrier so that your lunch doesn't get all over the microphone. :D
