Does anyone know of any parabolic microphones that are availible to buy from a website or shop in the uk? I have searched around but with no luck

cheers

What are you talking about? Are you refering to those 'spy' microphones which have a parabolic dish around them and pick up voices, bird, or whatever at long distances?
Do a search of spy gear if that's what you are looking for, also bird watchers use them too to record the calls of birds. If that's not what you are talking about I have not idea what you are referring to.

Yes that was what I was talking about. Thankyou Dracon I can see that you have tried hard to look but I was looking for ones that were availible to the uk. Even a design on how to build my own would help

Cheers

It seems to me that good condenser (preferably with battery power) and go to a scrap yard and get an old dish from a satelite dish. Modify it and get a laptop or some type of mobile recording unit (Digital or Tape) and perhaps a pair of headphones like it shows there, and I think you'd have it licked.

Have fun!

You could even through a little preamp in and just hook the headphones up to that....maybe even get a plastic toy gun from a toy store, saw off the barrel and mount the whole thing on there, then it would really look like a spy mic :D

parabolic reflectors.

If you want a good parabolic reflector. find a theatrical lighting supply house and see what they would sell you an old beam projector for. They use parabolic reflectors behind the lamp. You will have to fabricate a mount for a microphone yourself. Any descent mic will give you good results if you get it at the focal point for the unit. To find the focal point use a flashlight(torch, for those in the UK).

I built one once using one, it worked quite well.
