I was just installing a top hat in the bottom of my pa cabinets for a stand and on looking inside found there is no lining in the cab or round the speakers. I have always been under the impression that this improves the efficiency and sound? And have always used it when making cabs, never done it without. Any comments?

Yeah, not lining the interior walls sounds like a pretty bad idea to me. For ported speakers the main reason for lining the walls to reduce standing waves that especially color the upper bass/lower midrange.

You can easily do it yourself. Heavy foam carpet pad would definitely help. Wool carpet pad would even be better. There are more expensive materials like these http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?DID=7&WebPage_ID=3&Start=1&ObjectGroup_ID=37&sm=1&so=2 that would be good, but just the carpet pad will improve things a lot. Just keep any material you put in there about 10cm or so away from the ports.
