owens corning 703....HUH

hello all-first off-thanks to everyone here, home recording and john's site are the best info i've found on the internet...

?-i'm ready to start building some acoustical treatments and i'm fired up that it can be done relatively cheap....

but i've called every building supply place i know of and no one knows what 1 or 2 inch semi-rigid fiberglass insulation is...owens corning...knauf...whatever
granted most of them now have some.....(P.C.)in-experienced folks working the floor and phones...
so what do i ask for that these...people will understand

Look in the yellow pages under Insulation. 703 is definitely available, but not as Home Depot and places like that. And you probably won't find any place that has it in stock. But any Owens-Corning dealer can order it for you.

I was just quoted prices for 703 at Home Depot. I think they made a mistake on 2"

120 sheets 1" x 48" x 96"....$260
40 sheets 2" x?x?..... $200 (She didn't write down size)
70 sheets 3" x 24" x 48" $130

Hmmmmm, prices seem kind of wierd. But the gal (maybe thats why:D ) wrote them down just as you see here.

I'm sure that is wrong. I'm sure she was quoting something other than 703. One-inch 703 costs about 50 cents per quare foot, so 48x96 would be more like $16 per sheet. And 120 sheets would be a lot more than $260!

Hello Ethan, I agree, it was a little confusing. Under the 1" she wrote 10 packages, 120 sheets $260. Well, at the time I didn't pay attention. I will double check monday.

But heres the deal. If someone needs 703, and can't find it, I would be willing to ship it to them, but they would have to purchase a whole minimum purchase which is the prices I quoted above. I just have to double check what the quantities are. Postage would probably not be that much, seeing how it is very light, but you would probably end up paying for "oversize" through UPS. I'll have to find out if UPS will ship 96". Probably not. If thats the case, I'll see if 1" comes 24" x 48".

Myself, I'm interested in the 3" as it is going in a VERY small room. I only need half a package, which I am still not sure of the quantity or price. But I will find out. In either case, I would be willing to sell and ship whats left if anyone is interested.

Hey Ethan, I was behind you all the way on the acoustics altercation. I see you trying to help people BIG TIME all over the place. If you were only interested in a sale, you wouldn't bother giving out free info that would mean the loss of a sale. So heres to ya guy. I can also see their side, but I don't think that was the case. And BTW, I DO have questions regarding this stuff. Too Many:D Another day, another thread. Just have to figure out exactly what it is I want to find out! Man, what a can of worms acoustics is.
The more you find out, the more you find you don't know. ARRGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!

It really is available almost everywhere in the US. The key is to find an Owens-Corning distributor. Or a distributor for the equivalent products made by Mansville or Knauf.

Thanks. I can certainly see Eric's point. He wants the group to be free of commercial bias, and I prefer that myself. The real issue is someone would ask about bass traps, I'd send them to my DIY article because it has detailed explanations, but that article also mentions (briefly) the traps I sell commercially.

As you understand, my main goal is to spread the word on the need for real bass traps. Even if more folks end up building their own!
