Overhead Question

When I record my drums they sound very separate and not together as a drum set. Right now I have a yamaha YD but Im getting a vintage Rodgers set from the 60's. Will the upgrade in kits help this problem or is it an overhead thing. I record my hi hat and ride with MC012s, toms with 57s and snare with Ksm27, and beta52 on kick. Thanks in advance

How are you placing the overheads?

I also think it's a matter of mic placement. You should get a decent sound with those mics.

Also watch your panning. Although there are ppl who do it, I never pan overheads to hard, it makjes them sound unnatural.

ya i agree with the not panning to hard thing, but I have these mics right next to the hi hat and ride otherwise I cant really get a good sound out of them.

Your problem is in the placement of the MC012s.....

You should place them above the kit so they pick up everything...including all the cymbals, toms, snare, or any extra junk you might have set up-

You need to be sure that the snare is equidistant from both of the SDs, or else you'll be hurting once you pan 'em.
